Dalit Muslim
Dalit Muslim are low caste muslim Untouchables, also called Dalits, who have converted to Islam. Background Aftab Alam, a political scientist, states: ''"But caste and untouchability is a lived reality for Muslims living in India and South Asia, ''and untouchability is the community's worst-kept secret."Even though Islam is egalitarian in its social ethics, Indian Muslim society is characterised by caste-like features, consisting of several caste-like groups (''jatis'', ''biraderis''). Despite the conversion to Islam, the social and economic conditions of the Muslims in each caste hardly changed, and they remained tied down to their traditional occupations. Untouchability
Untouchability is a form of social institution that legitimises and enforces practices that are discriminatory, humiliating, exclusionary and exploitative against people belonging to certain social groups. Although comparable forms of discrimination are found all over the world, untouchability involving the caste system is largely unique to South Asia. The term is most commonly associated with treatment of the Dalit communities in the Indian subcontinent who were considered "polluting". The term has also been used to refer to other groups, including the ''Burakumin'' of Japan, the Baekjeong of Korea, and the Ragyabpa of Tibet, as well as the Romani people and Cagot in Europe, and the Al-Akhdam in Yemen Traditionally, the groups characterized as untouchable were those whose occupations and habits of life involved ritually "polluting" activities, such as fishermen, manual scavengers, sweepers and washermen. Dalit
Dalit (from sa, दलित, dalita meaning "broken/scattered"), also previously known as untouchable, is the lowest stratum of the Caste system in India, castes in India. Dalits were excluded from the four-fold Varna (Hinduism), varna system of Hinduism and were seen as forming a avarna, fifth varna, also known by the name of ''Panchama''. Caste System In India
The caste system in India is the paradigmatic ethnographic example of classification of castes. Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz ( ur, ) ("Marginalised Muslim Front") is an Indian Muslim activist organization based in Patna, Bihar. Founded in 1998, it represents the concerns the "Pasanda" Muslims, a new identity that integates the Dalit Muslims (''Arzals'') and backward-caste Muslims (''Ajlafs''), representing about 80 percent of Indian Muslims. Caste System Among South Asian Muslims
Muslim communities in South Asia apply a system of religious stratification. It developed as a result of ethnic segregation between the foreign conquerors/ Upper caste Hindus who converted to Islam (''Ashraf'') (also known as ''tabqa-i ashrafiyya'') and the local lower caste converts (''Ajlaf'') as well as the continuation of the Indian caste system among local converts. Non-Ashrafs are converts from Hindu lower caste. The neologism Pasmandas include Ajlaf and Arzal Muslims, and Ajlafs' statuses are defined by them being descendants of converts to Islam and are also defined by their ''pesha'' (profession). The Biradari System is how social stratification manifests itself in Pakistan, and to an extent also India.
