Dalhousie Station (South Australia)
Dalhousie Station, most commonly known as Dalhousie Springs Station, was a pastoral lease that once operated as a cattle station in South Australia. Dalhousie and other surrounding leases were acquired by the Australian Government in 1985 to make up Witjira National Park. The property was situated approximately north of Oodnadatta and south east of Aputula. The ephemeral Finke River passes for a distance of through the property with several semi-permanent water holes, before petering out well short of Lake Eyre further to the south east. The lease was initially won by Edward Meade Bagot in 1873. Bagot was a surveyor who had won the contract to construct the section of the Overland Telegraph from Port Augusta to the Peak. Bagot and Smith put the property on the market in 1889. At this time the station was stocked with 5,000 head of cattle and 130 horses. Pastoral Lease
A pastoral lease, sometimes called a pastoral run, is an arrangement used in both Australia and New Zealand where government-owned Crown land is leased out to graziers for the purpose of livestock grazing on rangelands. Australia Pastoral leases exist in both Australian commonwealth law and state jurisdictions. They do not give all the rights that attach to freehold land: there are usually conditions which include a time period and the type of activity permitted. According to Austrade, such leases cover about 44% of mainland Australia (), mostly in arid and semi-arid regions and the tropical savannahs. They usually allow people to use the land for grazing traditional livestock, but more recently have been also used for non-traditional livestock (such as kangaroos or camels), tourism and other activities. Todmorden Station, most commonly known as Todmorden, is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in South Australia. Location The property is situated approximately north west of Oodnadatta and east of Marla. The region is arid with several ephemeral creeks passing through the property including Alberga, Olarinna and Coongra Creeks, many of which have semi-permanent waterholes suitable for watering stock. The Oodnadatta Track runs through the property between Oodnadatta and Marla. The property is bounded to the north by Lambina and Hamilton Stations, to the east by Macumba, to the west by Wellbourn Hill and to the south by Arckaringa and Wintinna Stations. Description Todmorden currently occupies an area of sub-divided into 32 paddocks, and supports between 5000 and 7000 head of cattle. ''The Barrier Miner'' was a daily broadsheet newspaper published in Broken Hill in far western New South Wales from 1888 to 1974. History First published on 28 February 1888, ''The Barrier Miner'' was published continuously until 25 November 1974. Copies are available on microfilm and online via Trove Digitised Newspapers.
