Dakota Territory Supreme Court
The Dakota Territorial Supreme Court was the highest court of the Dakota Territory, then an organized incorporated territory of the United States. It was the first Territorial Supreme Court in American history, and was established under Article One of the United States Constitution, with justices were appointed directly by the President of the United States. The court sat in Yankton, South Dakota, and existed from March 2, 1861, to November 2, 1889. The first court consisted of three justices: Philemon Bliss, Lorenzo P. Williston, and Joseph Lanier Williams, appointed by President Abraham Lincoln. The court heard no cases until December 3, 1867. Other descriptions for such courts include court of last resort, apex court, and high (or final) court of appeal. Broadly speaking, the decisions of a supreme court are not subject to further review by any other court. Ara Bartlett
Ara Bartlett (born Bethany, Pennsylvania, 1825 – died Harper, Kansas, November 17, 1883) was an American lawyer and judge who was the second Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Dakota Territory. Bartlett moved to Kankakee, Illinois in 1853, the second lawyer to set up practice there. By 1858 he was serving as the police magistrate in Kankakee. He was elected judge of Kankakee County in 1861, serving until he was appointed an associate justice of the Dakota Territory Supreme Court by president Abraham Lincoln in June 1864. In 1865 he was appointed Chief Justice by Lincoln. Alanson ( ) is a village in Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 738 at the 2010 census. Alanson is in Littlefield Township on U.S. Highway 31 at the junction with M-68. Petoskey is about southwest on US 31 and Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge are about north. Interstate 75 is about to the east on M-68 at Indian River. Alanson was first settled in 1875. The Alanson post office opened with the name ''Hinman'' on January 17, 1877, and changed to Alanson on June 22, 1882. Attractions Located on the Crooked River, Alanson is part of the Inland Water Route, which includes: Crooked, Burt and Mullett lakes, and the Crooked, Indian and Cheboygan rivers. Wilmot Brookings
Wilmot Wood Brookings (October 23, 1830 – June 13, 1905) was an American pioneer, frontier judge, and early South Dakotan politician. He was provisional governor of the Dakota Territory, and both the cities of Wilmot and Brookings as well as the county of Brookings, South Dakota are named for him. Early life Brookings was born on October 23, 1830, in Woolwich, Maine to Abner and Susannah Bayley Brookings. (The 1860 Dakota Territory census lists his birthplace, possibly incorrectly, as North Carolina). Brookings attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, graduating in 1855. He married Clara Carney of Dresden, Maine and went on to teach at Litchfield, North Anson, and Wiscasset before being admitted to the bar in May 1857. Dakota Territory Brookings moved to Sioux Falls, Minnesota Territory on August 27, 1857, where he helped pioneers organize a county government (Minnehaha County). Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808July 31, 1875) was the 17th president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. He assumed the presidency as he was vice president at the time of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Johnson was a Democrat who ran with Lincoln on the National Union ticket, coming to office as the Civil War concluded. He favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union without protection for the newly freed people who were formerly enslaved. This led to conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress, culminating in his impeachment by the House of Representatives in 1868. He was acquitted in the Senate by one vote.
