Alec Naylor Dakin
Alec Naylor Dakin (3 April 1912 – 14 June 2003) was a Fellow of Oxford College, a cryptologist at Bletchley Park, an Egyptologist and schoolmaster. Early life and family Alec Dakin was born in Mytholmroyd in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1912, the son of inventor and sawmaker, Bertram Alexander Dakin and his wife Annie Louise Naylor who were married in 1908 in Todmorden. He came from an inventive family since his father, who was born in 1879, was an inventor (of carving knives, saws, pan handles and wall coatings). He won a scholarship to Heath School, Halifax. Academic career At school he won a second scholarship, this time to Queen's College, Oxford. There he read Greats and took walks with his fellow Yorkshire scholarship-boy and Nonconformist, Harold Wilson. Christine Dakin (born August 25, 1949, New Haven) is an American dancer, teacher and director, a foremost exponent of the Martha Graham repertory and technique. Performances Dakin is known for her performances of Ms. Graham's roles and for those created for her by Martha Graham and artists such as Robert Wilson, Twyla Tharp and Martha Clarke. Currently creating works for her are Brice Mousset, Alejandro Chávez, and Jaime Blanc. Performing in the principal theaters of the world, partnered by renowned artists such Rudolf Nureyev and filmed in the repertory, she was chosen by Graham for the company in 1976. Dakin became an Associate Artistic Director in 1997 and was named Artistic Director with Terese Capucilli in 2002. Glenn Dakin
Glenn Dakin (born 1960) is a British cartoonist and author of children's books. He is the author of the ''Candle Man'' book series, and he contributed to a number of British comics magazines including ''Escape'' and ''Deadline'', and was part of the British small press comics scene in the 1980s. His main creations are ''Temptation'' and the semi-autobiographical strip ''Abe''. Career While at college in Manchester Dakin was drawing ''Abe'' for his college magazine when he met Paul Gravett, who introduced him to the concept of self-publishing comics in zine form and distributing them via the mail and Gravett's Fast Fiction service. While initially dismissive, he soon became interested, corresponding with Eddie Campbell and Phil Elliott amongst others. Henry Drysdale Dakin Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS (12 March 188010 February 1952) was an England, English chemist. He was born in London as the youngest of 8 children to a family of steel merchants from Leeds. As a school boy, he conducted water analysis with the Leeds City Analyst. He studied chemistry at the University of Leeds with Julius B. Cohen, and then he worked with Albrecht Kossel on arginase at the University of Heidelberg. He joined Columbia University in 1905, working in the lab of Christian Archibald Herter (physician), Christian Herter. During his work on amino acids he obtained his PhD from Leeds. In 1905, he was one of the first scientists to successfully synthesise adrenaline in the laboratory (see: History of catecholamine research). In 1914 he went back to England to offer his service with the war effort. Janet Wilder Dakin (June 3, 1910 – October 7, 1994), was an American philanthropist and zoologist, known for her animal advocacy and environmental work. Biography Janet Frances Wilder was born in China, the daughter of Isabella Niven and Amos Parker Wilder. She was the youngest of several siblings who would become well known in adulthood: theologist and poet Amos Niven Wilder, author Thornton Wilder, poet Charlotte Wilder and writer Isabel Wilder. In 1906, her father was appointed the United States Consul General in Hong Kong and in 1909, he was assigned to a similar position in Shanghai, where he served until 1914. Nic Dakin
Sir Nicholas Dakin (born 10 July 1955) is a British Labour politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Scunthorpe from 2010 to 2019. He was the Shadow Minister for Schools from 2015 to 2016, Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons in 2015, and an opposition whip from 2011 to 2015 and 2016 to 2019. Early life Dakin grew up in Leicestershire and attended school there before studying at the University of Hull and then King's College London, completing his undergraduate degree and then his PGCE respectively. He had previously trained as an accountant. He taught English in Gävle, in eastern Sweden, and then at John Leggott College in Scunthorpe, where he became principal. Nigel John Dakin (born 28 February 1964) is a British diplomat currently serving as Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands. He assumed office on 15 July 2019 in a swearing-in ceremony before the territory's House of Assembly. On 15 December 2022, the Foreign, Commonwealth, & Development Office issued a press release announcing that Nigel Dakin would be leaving his post in June 2023. He will be succeeded at that time by Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam, the current Governor of Anguilla.
