A municipal district (MD) is the most common form of all rural municipality statuses used in the Canadian province of Alberta. Alberta's municipal districts, most of which are branded as a county (e.g. Yellowhead County, County of Newell, etc.), are predominantly rural areas that may include either farmland, Crown land or a combination of both depending on their geographic location. Caslan
Caslan is a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada in Athabasca County. It is south of Highway 55, west of Cold Lake. The first baby in the area was born in 1921. There is a general store that also sells alcohol and gasoline, and a Canada Post outlet. The hamlet also has an elementary school, a community centre, and a volunteer fire hall. Residences are on acreages and large lots. Some homes are just seasonal usage. The area is wooded. Coyotes, deer, and moose are common. Hamlets in the province of Alberta, Canada, are unincorporated communities administered by, and within the boundaries of, specialized municipalities or rural municipalities ( municipal districts, improvement districts and special areas). They consist of five or more dwellings (a majority of which are on parcels of land that are smaller than 1,850 m2), have a generally accepted boundary and name, and contain parcels of land used for non-residential purposes. Section 59 of the Municipal Government Act (MGA) enables specialized municipalities and municipal districts to designate a hamlet, while Section 590 of the MGA enables the Minister of Alberta Municipal Affairs to designate a hamlet within an improvement district.
