Dakar Biennale
The Dakar Biennale, or Dak'Art - Biennale de l'Art Africain Contemporain, is a major contemporary art exhibition that takes place once every two years in Dakar, Senegal. Dak'Art's focus has been on Contemporary African Art since 1996. History The Dakar Biennale was conceived in 1989 as a biennale alternating between literature and art. The first edition in 1990 was focused on literature and in 1992 on visual art. In 1993 the structure of the biennale was transformed and Dak'Art 1996 became an exhibition specifically devoted to Contemporary African Art. In 1998 the structure was consolidated and in 2000 there was considerable change: Abdoulaye Wade was elected president of Senegal a few months before the opening of the event. Dakar Biennale 1990
The Dakar Biennale 1990 is the first edition of the Dakar Biennale organised in Dakar in Senegal in 1990 and focused on literature. The biennale is opened in Dakar with the title ''Biennale des Lettres'' (Biennale of literature) and is focused on ''Aires Culturelles et Création Littéraire en Afrique'' (Cultural zones and literary production in Africa). Programme The biennale consists of a debate structured in four workshops. At the centre of the attention there are both national literature and a pan-African approach, capable of linking and strengthening the production of the African continent and its diaspora. Yacouba Konaté
Yacouba Konaté (4 May 1953) is a curator, writer, art critic and professor of philosophy at the Université de Cocody in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. He is a member of l'Académie des Arts, des Sciences et des Cultures d'Afrique et des Diasporas in Abidjan and he leads the Africa Office of the Jean Paul Blachère's Foundation. In 1998, he was Fulbright Professor at Stanford University, between 2004–2008, he taught at l'École des hautes études en sciences sociales in France. After founder and editor Rasheed Araeen's earlier art magazine ''Black Phoenix'', which started in 1978 and published only three issues, ''Third Text'' was launched as a theoretical art journal in 1987. Rasheed Araeen
Rasheed Araeen ( ur, رشید آرائیں; born 1935) is a Karachi born, London-based conceptual artist, sculptor, painter, writer, and curator. He graduated in civil engineering from the NED University of Engineering and Technology in 1962, and has been working as a visual artist bridging life, art and activism since his arrival in London from Pakistan in 1964. Art career Araeen was pursuing a career as an engineer in Karachi when he was first exposed to avant-garde art. This arrived through two channels: imported Western books and magazines and contact with Pakistani contemporary artists. Consequently, he decided to pursue art-making and embarked on a second career. Upon arriving in London in 1964, Araeen began working as an artist without any formal training, producing sculptures influenced by Minimalism and the work of Anthony Caro alongside his engineering experience.
