Daine Laurie (born 2 August 1984) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 2000s and 2010s. He played as a for the Wests Tigers and Penrith Panthers in the NRL. Playing career Wests Tigers Born in Yamba, New South Wales, Laurie played junior football with the Yamba Dolphins before being signed by the Western Suburbs Magpies in the New South Wales Cup. In June 2008, Laurie signed a 2-year with the Wests Tigers starting in the same year. In Round 15 of the 2008 NRL season he made his NRL debut against the Brisbane Broncos. Penrith Panthers In September 2009, Laurie signed a two-year deal to join the Penrith Panthers from the 2010 season. Laurie had been released from his contract with the Tigers and was facing criminal proceedings at the time, having been charged for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, although the charge was later dismissed. Yamba, New South Wales
Yamba is a town in northern New South Wales, Australia at the mouth of the Clarence River. The first European to visit the area was Matthew Flinders, who stopped in Yamba Bay for six days in July 1799. The town economy is strongly based on fishing and tourism, but has a diverse range of influences, due to the 'Sea Change' phenomenon and the large number of baby boomers who are starting to retire to the warmer climates. The Newcastle Rugby League is a local rugby league football competition in Newcastle, Australia. It is one of the oldest rugby league competitions in Australia, founded in 1910. A Newcastle representative team was also assembled from players in the League during most of the 20th century. The first grade competition also comprises the NSWRL Presidents Cup Northern Conference. History A Newcastle team competed in the inaugural New South Wales Rugby League premiership of 1908 but withdrew after the 1909 season to form the local competition. Nambucca Heads
Nambucca Heads is a town on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia in the Nambucca Valley. It is located on a ridge, north of the estuary of the Nambucca River near the Pacific Highway. Its 2021 population was 6,675 (6,327 in 2016 census, 6,137 in 2011 census), including 5,226 (78.3%) Australian-born persons and 672 indigenous persons. The place name is derived from an Gumbaynggirr word Ngambagabaga. Clement Hodgkinson asked two Ngamba men what the name of the area was they responded to Nyambagabaga as the spot they were standing was a bend in the river where a Ngamba giant was speared in the leg in the Dreaming. This location is the Foreshore Caravan Park now. Ngamba is a subsection of Gumbaynggirr Nation & Baga Baga means Knee. This was later interpreted as Nambucca. Bird previously played for the NRL for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and the Gold Coast Titans. He played for the Catalans Dragons in the Super League in two separate spells, having previously played for the French club in 2009. The Indigenous Australian rugby league team (also known as the Indigenous All Stars or Indigenous Dreamtime team) is a rugby league football team that represents Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders. 2008 Rugby League World Cup
The 2008 Rugby League World Cup was the thirteenth staging of the Rugby League World Cup since its inauguration in 1954, and the first since the 2000 tournament. The tournament was held in Australia from 26 October, culminating in the final between Australia and New Zealand on 22 November. The tournament was the fourth time that the World Cup was held in Australia, the first being in 1957. The tournament was won by New Zealand, who defeated Australia 34–20 in the final in one of the greatest upsets in the history of the sport. The tournament featured the best ten teams around the globe which were split into three groups. A total of eighteen matches took place in twelve different venues across four Australian states. The tournament ended a year of celebrations commemorating the centenary of the game in the southern hemisphere and was part of the Festival of World Cups. New Zealand MÄori rugby league team is a rugby league representative side made up of New Zealand MÄori players. The side represents the New Zealand MÄori Rugby league. Like its union counterpart, the rugby league team previously competed in international competitions. With some controversy, the team participated in the 2000 World Cup as Aotearoa MÄori. The Super League International Board had agreed to give a place in their World Cup to the New Zealand MÄori team as they attempted to gain allies during the Super League war.
