Orienteering
Orienteering is a group of sports that require navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has developed many variations. Among these, the oldest and the most popular is foot orienteering. For the purposes of this article, foot orienteering serves as a point of departure for discussion of all other variations, but almost any sport that involves racing against a clock and requires navigation with a map is a type of orienteering. World Orienteering Championships
The World Orienteering Championships (or WOC for short) is an annual orienteering event organized by the International Orienteering Federation. The first World Championships was held in Fiskars, Finland in 1966. They were held biennially up to 2003 (with the exception of 1978 and 1979). Since 2003, competitions have been held annually. Participating nations have to be members of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). Originally, there were only two competitions: an individual race and a relay. In 1991, a short distance race (roughly 20–25 minutes) was added and a sprint race was added in 2001. The middle distance (roughly 30–35 minutes) replaced the short distance in 2003. 1966 World Orienteering Championships
The 1st World Orienteering Championships were held in the village of Fiskars, Finland, 1–2 October 1966. Participants from eleven nations competed in the championships: Austria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, East Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Hungary, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. The medals were distributed between Sweden (3 gold, 1 bronze), Finland (3 silver, 1 bronze), Norway (1 gold, 2 bronze) and Switzerland (1 silver medal). The men's individual course had 11 controls over 14.1 kilometres, while the women's individual course had 10 controls over 8.1 kilometres. The first individual world champions in orienteering came from Norway and Sweden. Winner of the men's competition was Ã…ge Hadler from Norway. Ola Skarholt
Ola Skarholt (30 November 1939 – 18 June 2017), was a Norwegian orienteering competitor. He became Relay World Champion in 1970 as a member of the Norwegian winning team, which also consisted of Stig Berge, Per Fosser and Ã…ge Hadler. Skarholt placed fourth in the individual contest. He also won bronze medals in the relay in the 1966 and 1968 World Orienteering Championships. Skarholt represented the clubs SK Freidig and IL i BUL. His results at the include an individual gold medal in 1965. Skarholt was educated at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, and worked as engineer in the electric power industry. His last job before retirement was a fourteen-year stint as managing director of Lier Electricity Works. Ã…ge Hadler (born 14 August 1944) is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, winner of the 1966 and 1972 individual World Orienteering Championships, relay champion from 1970, and individual bronze medalist from 1968. Early life and career Hadler was born in Bergen as the son of Aage Hadler and Ruth Karin Rosendahl. He married fellow orienteer Ingrid Thoresen in 1968. His first sports club was Bergens Turnforening. He studied at the University of Oslo, and graduated as cand.real. degree in 1970. Sports career Hadler had his breakthrough in competitive orienteering in 1966. He participated at the very first World Orienteering Championships, which were held in Fiskars, Finland, 2 and 3 October. Here he won the first individual World Champion title in men's Orienteering.
