Paul Richter
Paul Richter (1 April 1895 – 30 December 1961) was an Austrian film actor. He owed his great popularity in German films of the silent era largely to the directors Joe May and Fritz Lang. Biography Richter made his film debut right before World War I in ''Der Sterbewalzer'' (1914), directed by Fritz Freund. With the outbreak of the war, his film activity ceased temporarily, and he joined the Austrian Kaiserjäger, serving as an infantryman in the Carpathian Mountains, from which he was later detached to a mountain guide course. His strong feeling for nature, acquired at that time, became a feature of his life, and later, of his movies. Ernst Deutsch
Ernst Deutsch, also known as Ernest Dorian (16 September 1890 – 22 March 1969), was a Jewish Austrian actor. In 1916, his performance as the protagonist in the world première of Walter Hasenclever's Expressionist play '' The Son'' in Dresden was praised. Deutsch also played the antihero Famulus in Paul Wegener's '' The Golem: How He Came into the World'' in 1920. He is known by English-speaking audiences for his role as Baron Kurtz in Carol Reed's 1949 ''film noir'', ''The Third Man''. Family Deutsch was the son of Prague-based Jewish merchant Ludwig Kraus and his wife, Louise. He married childhood friend Anuschka Fuchsova (daughter of Prague industrialist Arthur Fuchs) in 1922. Mary Johnson (actress)
Mary Johnson (born Astrid Maria Carlsson; 11 May 1896 – 15 May 1975) was a Swedish film actress of the silent era. Biography Astrid Maria Carlsson was born in Fors parish, Södermanland, Sweden. She debuted in the 1910s in the theater company of director Karin Swanström (1873–1942). In 1914, together with her first husband Karl Gerhard Johnson (1891–1964), she went to the Nya Teatern in Gothenburg acting under the direction of theatre manager Hjalmar Selander (1859–1928). During the 1920s, she moved to Berlin and appeared as a leading lady in a number of German films. In 1932, she married German film actor, Rudolf Klein-Rogge (1885–1955). She died at Brännkyrka and was buried in the memorial grove of Skogskyrkogården in Stockholm. Marcella Albani (born Ida Fidalma Angela Maranca; 7 December 1899 – 11 May 1959), was an Italian actress and writer. Although largely forgotten today, Albani was an idol of European cinema in the 1920s, and appeared in 50 films between 1919 and 1936 in 5 different countries. Hedwig Wangel (1875–1961) was a German stage and film actress. Life and career Born as Amalie Pauline Hedwig Simon on September 23, 1875, in Berlin in the German Empire, Hedwig Wangel was the daughter of a music publisher. After studying acting with Max Grube, she made her theatrical debut in 1893 in ''Urania''. Following performances for the remainder of the decade in theaters across Germany, during which she was a member of Max Reinhardt's Deutsches Theater, she then toured England during 1901 and 1902 and the Netherlands during 1902 and 1903, when she retired suddenly, began to provide care for homeless men and women, and assisted the Salvation Army and the Berliner Prisoner Association. Paul Wegener
Paul Wegener (11 December 1874 – 13 September 1948) was a German actor, writer, and film director known for his pioneering role in German expressionist cinema. Acting career At the age of 20, Wegener decided to end his law studies and concentrate on acting, touring the provinces before joining Max Reinhardt's acting troupe in 1906. In 1912, he turned to the new medium of motion pictures and appeared in the 1913 version of '' The Student of Prague''. It was while making this film that he first heard the old Jewish legend of the Golem and proceeded to adapt the story to film, co-directing and co-writing the script with Henrik Galeen. Joe May (born Joseph Otto Mandl; 7 November 1880 – 29 April 1954) was an Austrian film director and film producer and one of the pioneers of German cinema. Biography After studying in Berlin and a variety of odd jobs, he began his career as a stage director of operettas in Hamburg. In 1902 he had married the actress Mia May (born Hermine Pfleger) and took his stage name from hers. Continental-Kunstfilm As Joe May, he made ten films for Continental-Kunstfilm GmbH in Berlin; the first, ''In der Tiefe des Schachtes (In the Depths of the Pit)'' was released in November 1912, followed by ''Vorglühen des Balkanbrandes (The Balkan Traitors)'' (starring Ernst Reicher).
