Daakaka
Daakaka (also known as ''Dakaka'', ''South Ambrym'' and ''Baiap'') is a native language of Ambrym, Vanuatu. It is spoken by about one thousand speakers in the south-western corner of the island. Vitality Most children in the region still acquire Daakaka as a first language, but it is under threat by significant socio-economic changes and the dominant use of Vanuatu's official languages, Bislama, English and French, in education and in official contexts.Unless indicated otherwise, all information comes from von Prince (2012). Ambrym
Ambrym is a volcanic island in Malampa Province in the archipelago of Vanuatu. Volcanic activity on the island includes lava lakes in two craters near the summit. Etymology Ambrym (also known as ''Ambrin'', ''"ham rim"'' in the Ranon language) was allegedly named by Captain Cook, who is said to have anchored off there in 1774. In fact, his expedition never touched Ambrym. Geography Located near the center of the Vanuatuan archipelago, Ambrym is roughly triangular in shape, about wide. Prenasalized Consonant
Prenasalized consonants are phonetic sequences of a nasal and an obstruent (or occasionally a non-nasal sonorant such as ) that behave phonologically like single consonants. The primary reason for considering them to be single consonants, rather than clusters as in English ''finger'' or ''member'', lies in their behaviour; however, there may also be phonetic correlates which distinguish prenasalized consonants from clusters. Velars are consonants articulated with the back part of the tongue (the dorsum) against the soft palate, the back part of the roof of the mouth (known also as the velum). A fricative is a consonant produced by forcing air through a narrow channel made by placing two articulators close together.
