DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM (DVD Random Access Memory) is a DVD-based disc specification presented in 1996 by the DVD Forum, which specifies rewritable DVD-RAM media and the appropriate DVD writers. DVD-RAM media have been used in computers as well as camcorders and personal video recorders since 1998. In May 2019, Panasonic, the only remaining manufacturer of DVD-RAM discs, announced that it would end production of DVD-RAM media by the end of that month, citing shrinking demand as the primary motivation. Panasonic made these discs under its own brand name and also under the Verbatim brand. The "RAM" in its name is related to random-access memory that computers use as main memory, not in the technology but in sense that it can be used as a random-access memory unit rather than a sequential-access memory unit such as a magnetic tape drive. Phase-change Dual
Phase-change Dual (or Phase-change Disc) is a rewritable optical disc and a standard for it, developed by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. in April 1995. It has a capacity of 650 MB on one side, and the size of the disc is 12 cm in diameter (5 inches), similar to a general CD or DVD, and is encased in a caddy. The phase change recording technology using red laser light is adopted, and about 500,000 times of rewriting is possible. The built-in PD drive and the external type are sold, respectively, and both of them can read the CD-ROM. Caddy (hardware)
In computer hardware, a caddy is a container used to protect an optical media disc from damage when handling. Its functionality is similar to that of the 3.5" floppy disk's jacket. Its use dates back to at least the Capacitance Electronic Disc in 1981, and they were also used in initial versions of the Blu-ray Disc. As a cost-saving measure, newer versions use hard-coating technology to prevent scratches and do not need a caddy. Caddies may be an integral part of the medium, as in some DVD-RAM discs, or separately attached. Zone Bit Recording
In computer storage, zone bit recording (ZBR) is a method used by disk drives to optimise the tracks for increased data capacity. It does this by placing more sectors per zone on outer tracks than inner tracks. This contrasts with other approaches, such as '' constant angular velocity'' (CAV) drives, where the number of sectors per track are the same. On a disk consisting of roughly concentric tracks, whether realized as separate circular tracks or as a single spiral track, the physical track length (circumference) is increased as it gets further from the centre hub. The inner tracks are packed as densely as the particular drive's technology allows. The packing of the rest of the disks is changed depending on the type of disk.
