Shallow Trench Isolation
Shallow trench isolation (STI), also known as box isolation technique, is an integrated circuit feature which prevents electric current leakage between adjacent semiconductor device components. STI is generally used on CMOS process technology nodes of 250 nanometers and smaller. Older CMOS technologies and non-MOS technologies commonly use isolation based on LOCOS. STI is created early during the semiconductor device fabrication process, before transistors are formed. The key steps of the STI process involve etching a pattern of trenches in the silicon, depositing one or more dielectric materials (such as silicon dioxide) to fill the trenches, and removing the excess dielectric using a technique such as chemical-mechanical planarizationbr> Certain semiconductor fabrication technologies also include deep trench isolation, a related feature often found in analog integrated circuits. The effect of the trench edge has given rise to what has recently been termed the "reverse narro ...

Dial Test Indicator
In various contexts of science, technology, and manufacturing (such as machining, fabricating, and additive manufacturing), an indicator is any of various instruments used to accurately measure small distances and angles, and amplify them to make them more obvious. The name comes from the concept of '' indicating'' to the user that which their naked eye cannot discern; such as the presence, or exact quantity, of some small distance (for example, a small height difference between two flat surfaces, a slight lack of concentricity between two cylinders, or other small physical deviations). The classic mechanical version, called a dial indicator, provides a dial display similar to a clock face with clock hands; the hands point to graduations in a circular scales on the dial which represent the distance of the probe tip from a zero setting. The internal works of a mechanical dial indicator are similar to the precision clockworks of a mechanical wristwatch, employing a rack and pinio ...

Diffusion Tensor Imaging
Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI or DW-MRI) is the use of specific MRI sequences as well as software that generates images from the resulting data that uses the diffusion of water molecules to generate contrast in MR images. It allows the mapping of the diffusion process of molecules, mainly water, in biological tissues, in vivo and non-invasively. Molecular diffusion in tissues is not random, but reflects interactions with many obstacles, such as macromolecules, fibers, and membranes. Water molecule diffusion patterns can therefore reveal microscopic details about tissue architecture, either normal or in a diseased state. A special kind of DWI, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), has been used extensively to map white matter tractography in the brain. Introduction In diffusion weighted imaging (DWI), the intensity of each image element (voxel) reflects the best estimate of the rate of water diffusion at that location. Because the mobility of water is driven by t ...

Direct Thrombin Inhibitor
Direct thrombin inhibitors (DTIs) are a class of medication that act as anticoagulants (delaying blood clotting) by directly inhibiting the enzyme thrombin (factor IIa). Some are in clinical use, while others are undergoing clinical development. Several members of the class are expected to replace heparin (and derivatives) and warfarin in various clinical scenarios. Types There are three types of DTIs, dependent on their interaction with the thrombin molecule. ''Bivalent'' DTIs (hirudin and analogs) bind both to the active site and exosite 1, while univalent DTIs bind only to the active site. The third class of inhibitors, which are gaining importance recently, is the allosteric inhibitors. Bivalent Hirudin and derivatives were originally discovered in ''Hirudo medicinalis'': * Hirudin * Bivalirudin (transient inhibition - is cleaved by thrombin) * Lepirudin * Desirudin Univalent Univalent DTIs include: * Argatroban * Inogatran * Melagatran (and its prodrug ximelagatran) * Dabiga ...

Common Rail
Common rail direct fuel injection is a direct fuel injection system built around a high-pressure (over ) fuel rail feeding solenoid valves, as opposed to a low-pressure fuel pump feeding unit injectors (or pump nozzles). High-pressure injection delivers power and fuel consumption benefits over earlier lower pressure fuel injection, by injecting fuel as a larger number of smaller droplets, giving a much higher ratio of surface area to volume. This provides improved vaporization from the surface of the fuel droplets, and so more efficient combining of atmospheric oxygen with vaporized fuel delivering more complete combustion. Common rail injection is widely used in diesel engines. It is also the basis of gasoline direct injection systems used on petrol engines. History Vickers pioneered the use of common rail injection in submarine engines. Vickers engines with the common rail fuel system were first used in 1916 in the G-class submarines. It used four plunger pumps to deliver ...

Direct Tension Indicator
Direct tension indicators, or DTIs, are single-use mechanical load cells used to indicate when the required tension has been achieved in structural fastener assemblies. History The load-indicating washer was invented in England in 1962. Specification The standard for DTIs in North America is the ASTM International series of standards and the specific designation for testing and manufacturing DTIs is ASTM F959: ''Standard Specification for Compressible-Washer Type Direct Tension Indicators for Use with Structural Fasteners''. DTIs are generally installed in accordance with the '' Research Council on Structural Connections'' (RCSC) ''Specification for Structural Joints using High-Strength Bolts''. The RCSC specification has been adopted, in its entirety, by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and appears as section 16 of that organization's ''Steel Construction Manual''. DTIs within the RCSC specification section 8.2.4 are described thus: "ASTM F959 direc ...

Dye Transfer Inhibitor
A dye is a wiktionary:colored, colored substance that chemically bonds to the wikt:substrate, substrate to which it is being applied. This distinguishes dyes from pigments which do not chemically bind to the material they color. Dye is generally applied in an aqueous solution and may require a mordant to improve the fastness of the dye on the fiber. There are two broad categories of dyes: Natural dye, natural and synthetic; Natural dyes are dyes extracted from Plant, plants, Insect, Insects, or Mineral, minerals. The majority of natural dyes are vegetable dyes derived from plant sources such as Root, roots, Berry, berries, Bark (botany), bark, Leaf, leaves, and wood, as well as other biological sources like Fungus, fungi. Synthetic dyes are also referred to as "coal tar dyes" because they are derived from Chemical substance, substances that, until recently, could only be extracted from coal tar. A synthetic dye consists of a chromophore and an auxochrome added to a benzene deriv ...
