Orenstein & Koppel
Orenstein & Koppel (normally abbreviated to "O&K") was a major Germany, German engineering company specialising in railway vehicles, escalators, and heavy equipment. It was founded on April 1, 1876 in Berlin by Benno Orenstein and Arthur Koppel. Originally a general engineering company, O&K soon started to specialise in the manufacture of railway vehicles. The company also manufactured heavy equipment and escalators. O&K pulled out of the railway business in 1981. Its escalator-manufacturing division was spun off to the company's majority shareholder at the time, Krupp, Friedrich Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp, in 1996, leaving the company to focus primarily on construction machines. Luttermöller Axle
A Luttermöller axle is an unusual steam locomotive component. Steam locomotives with several axles or Wheelset (rail transport), wheelsets connected to one another by coupling rods are not able to negotiate tight curves well. In order to assist such locomotives, the manager of the Orenstein & Koppel factory in Berlin, Dr. Luttermöller, built the axle system named after him. Overview With this system, the outermost of several sets of successive driving wheel sets are not connected by coupling rods to crankshaft journals on the outside of the wheels, but by Gear, cogwheels located in the centre of the axles. The axles are housed in the locomotive frame such that they are able to move at right angles to the axis of the rails to a certain degree, likewise the cogwheels are able to slide relative to one another. DB Class 82
The DB Class 82 was a tank locomotive, goods train tank locomotive with the Deutsche Bundesbahn in Germany, that was built in the period after the Second World War and was intended for shunting (rail), shunting and normal rail services. They were to replace the ten-coupled state railway (''Länderbahn'') engines and also the accident-prone DRG Class 87, Class 87 DRG ''Einheitslok'' (standard locomotive). It was the first of the DB's so-called ''Neubaudampflokomotiven'' or newly designed steam locomotives, and was built by the firms of Krupp and Henschel-Werke, Henschel in 1950 and 1951 and also by the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen in 1955. Coupling Rods
A coupling rod or side rod connects the driving wheels of a locomotive. Steam locomotives in particular usually have them, but some diesel and electric locomotives, especially older ones and shunters, also have them. The coupling rods transfer the power of drive to all wheels. Development Locomotion No. 1 was the first locomotive to employ coupling rods rather than chains.
