DBAG Class 088
The Deutsche Bahn AG in Germany reserves classes 088, 188 and 288 for all historical motive power (locomotives, multiple-units, railcars and railbuses) that are no longer part of their active, commercial fleet, but are still in their inventory. These classes are however, generally, 'virtual' because whilst they are used in the computerised database for management purposes, the running numbers are usually only recorded in the cab of the actual vehicle. Externally the original vehicle numbers are displayed. A steam locomotive is a locomotive that provides the force to move itself and other vehicles by means of the expansion of steam. It is fuelled by burning combustible material (usually coal, oil or, rarely, wood) to heat water in the locomotive's boiler to the point where it becomes gaseous and its volume increases 1,700 times. An electric locomotive is a locomotive powered by electricity from overhead lines, a third rail or on-board energy storage such as a battery or a supercapacitor. This list provides an overview of the motive power operated by Deutsche Bahn. It only includes those vehicles that have been in service with the Deutsche Bahn AG since its formation on 1 January 1994. The classes are numbered according to the locomotive classification of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, which had been adopted by Deutsche Bahn in 1994. Since 2007, classifications for all German railway companies are centrally issued by the Federal Railway Office in line with UIC classification rules.
