D-segment
The D-segment is the 4th category of the European segments for passenger cars, and is described as "large cars". It is equivalent to the Euro NCAP "large family car" size class, and the present-day definition of the mid-size car category used in North America. Compact executive cars are part of the D-segment size category. D-segment sales represent approx. 7% of the market in 2010s. Characteristics Most D-segment cars are sedans/saloons or wagons/estates but hatchbacks, and coupes have been common. Pricing and specification of D-segment cars can vary greatly, from basic low-cost transport to more luxurious and expensive models. Hatchback
A hatchback is a car body configuration with a rear door that swings upward to provide access to a cargo area. Hatchbacks may feature fold-down second row seating, where the interior can be reconfigured to prioritize passenger or cargo volume. Hatchbacks may feature two- or three-box design. While early examples of the body configuration can be traced to the 1930s, the Merriam-Webster dictionary dates the term itself to 1970. The hatchback body style has been marketed worldwide on cars ranging in size from superminis to small family cars, as well as executive cars and some sports cars. Opel Insignia
The Opel Insignia is a D-segment large family car developed and produced by the German car manufacturer Opel, currently in its second generation. It was officially launched in October 2008, as a replacement for the Vectra and Signum that were discontinued. In the United Kingdom, it has been rebadged by Vauxhall and sold under the Vauxhall Insignia name. In 2018, the Holden marque in Australia launched a new derivative version and started offering as the Holden Commodore, and in 2013 in China, United States, Canada and Latin America, both under the Insignia nameplate and as the Buick Regal. BMW 3 Series
The BMW 3 Series is a line of compact executive cars manufactured by the German automaker BMW since May 1975. It is the successor to the 02 Series and has been produced in seven generations. The first generation of the 3 Series was only available as a 2-door saloon; however, the model range has since expanded to include a 4-door saloon, 2-door convertible, 2-door coupé, 5-door estate, 5-door liftback (" Gran Turismo") and 3-door hatchback body styles. The Mercedes-Benz W205 is the fourth generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class which was produced by Daimler AG between 2014 and 2021. The W205 C-Class was preceded by the W204 C-Class and superseded by the W206 C-Class. The fourth-generation C-Class was available in sedan (W205), station wagon/estate (S205), coupe (C205), cabriolet (A205) and long-wheelbase sedan (V205) body styles. The W205 was the first vehicle to use the all-new Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform. The 4 Series was created when BMW spun off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the 3 Series into a separate series. The 4 Series is currently in its second generation.
