D'Ursel Castle
D'Ursel Castle ( nl, Kasteel van Hingene, also known as the ''Kasteel d'Ursel'') used to be the private summer residence of the Duke of Ursel in Hingene in the municipality of Bornem, province of Antwerp, Belgium. Today it is property of the State, and opened to the public. History The first resident was Diederik van de Werve (1519-1598), his descendants sold it to Conrad III Schetz in 1608. The estate became the summer residence of the House of Ursel. The Dukes of Ursel and their family resided for 350 years on the estate. Its original view can be seen in the ''Flandria Illustrata''. A famous resident was Conrard-Albert, first Duke of Ursel (1665-1738). His son, Charles, 2nd Duke d'Ursel asked Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni (1695-1766) to redesign the family estate. Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni
Jean-Nicolas Servan, also known as Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni (2 May 1695 – 19 January 1766) was an Italian decorator, architect, scene-painter, firework designer and trompe-l'œil specialist. He was born in Florence, the son of a French carriage driver. Career He was educated as an artist of perspective in Rome and was a pupil of Giovanni Paolo Panini worked in London as a set designer at the recently founded Royal Academy of Music but moved to Paris in 1724, where he became director of decorations (1724 to 1742) at the Paris Opera, at that time situated in the Théâtre du Palais-Royal. He became a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1731. His activity was considerable, whether as a painter or as an inventor of scenic contrivances for fêtes at the marriage of royal personages. Duke Of Ursel
The House of Ursel is the name of an important old Belgian noble family of German origin. The Head of the House is styled the Duke of Ursel, while other members are styled as Count/Countess d'Ursel. History The Ursel family roots are in Schmalkalden, Germany, and were collateral branch of the House of Schetzenberg. In the late 15th century, some members moved to Hasselt and Antwerp. Amongst the family members we find Gaspard II Schetz, the Lord of Grobbendonck, who married Catherine van Ursel, daughter of Lancelot II of Ursel. Hingene
Hingene is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) of the municipality of Bornem in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. The village is bordered to the north by the Scheldt and to the east by the Rupel. It is located about south-west of the city of Antwerp. History In 1846, a hoard of coins was discovered in Hingene from the Roman era. Due to its proximity to the Scheldt and Rupel, the area mainly consists of ''polder'' land. Early dike building started in the 11th century, and during the 15th century the rivers were constrained by dikes. The early history of the area is characterised by rivalry with Bornem. In 1535, Hingene became property of Henry III of Nassau-Breda. His nephew William the Silent became Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland and Utrecht, and was forced to sell Hingene in 1560 as an independent ''heerlijkheid'' to the Lord of Grobbendonk whose family later became known as the Dukes of Ursel. Conrad III Schetz
Conrad (or Coenraad) Schetz de Grobbendonck, later Conrad d'Ursel (1553–1632) was a nobleman in the Habsburg Netherlands and in 1604–1609 the first ordinary ambassador to England for the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. Ursel family The 5th son of Gaspard II Schetz and Catharina d'Ursel, daughter of Lancelot II of Ursel, he was baptised in Antwerp on 19 March 1553. His parents had 21 children in total, eight of whom survived to adulthood. He was the fifth son. His father was the chief banker in Antwerp, financing several merchants who traded to Russia and Brazil, as well as being banker to Philip II of Spain, which gave him a political role and made him a leading figure in the Antwerp of the second half of the 16th century. In 1617 he inherited the estates of his aunt, Barbara of Ursel, last heir of Lancelot II of Ursel, on the condition that he and his heirs in perpetuity change their name and coat of arms to d'Ursel. Charles, 2nd Duke D'Ursel
Charles Elisabeth Conrard, 2nd Duke d'Ursel and of Hoboken, Prince of Arches and Charleville and Count of Grobbendoncq (1717–1775) was a Belgian Duke. He succeeded his father and became the second Duke of Ursel in 1738. He was the First Prince of Arche and Charleville of the Ursel Branche, titles inherited by his mother Princess zu Salm. He made career at the imperial court in Vienna, was Imperial Lord Chamberlain and Field Marshall. He was made knight of the Golden Fleece in 1771. Hingene Charles was of importance for the familial patrimony: he decides to engage Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni to redesign the Castle of Hingene both the interior and exterior are restyled. The House of Sinzendorf (also: Sinzendorff) was a Bavarian-Austrian noble family with Upper Austrian origin (Sinzendorf in Nußbach), not to be confused with the Lower Austrian House of Zinzendorf. The family belonged to prestigious circle of high nobility families, but died out in 1822 in the male line. Henri Charles Francis Joseph Marie, 8th Duke d'Ursel (Henri, 8th Duke d'Ursel) (18 November 1900 – 31 May 1974, in Uccle) was a Belgian film director and writer. Henri d'Ursel was known for his surrealist style, directing the film ''La Perle'' early in his career. Family Henri d'Ursel was born in Brussels, son of the 7th duke of Ursel. During the 1920s, he lived in Paris at the height of the surrealist and avant-garde movements.
