Cyril Mitchley
Cyril John Mitchley (born 4 July 1938) is a South African former cricket player, umpire and match referee. As an umpire he officiated in first-class and Test cricket matches. Playing career During the late 1960s he played for Transvaal as a wicket-keeper in South African domestic cricket. Umpiring and refereeing career He later became an umpire, culminating with him becoming a Test cricket umpire. Between 1992 and 2000, he stood in 26 Test matches and 61 One Day Internationals (ODIs). In a match between South Africa and India in 1992, Mitchley made history by making the first referral to a third umpire in Test cricket history. Sachin Tendulkar was out after Mitchley referred a run out decision. He famously gave two LBWs when English bowler Dominic Cork took a hat-trick against the West Indies at Old Trafford in 1995. Wicket-keeper
The wicket-keeper in the sport of cricket is the player on the fielding side who stands behind the wicket or stumps being watchful of the batsman and ready to take a catch, stump the batsman out and run out a batsman when occasion arises. The wicket-keeper is the only member of the fielding side permitted to wear gloves and external leg guards. The role of the keeper is governed by Law 27 of the Laws of Cricket. Stance Initially, during the bowling of the ball the wicket-keeper crouches in a full squatting position but partly stands up as the ball is received. Australian wicket-keeper Sammy Carter (1878 to 1948) was the first to squat on his haunches rather than bend over from the waist (stooping). South African Cricketers
South is one of the cardinal directions or compass points. The direction is the opposite of north and is perpendicular to both east and west. This is a list of cricket umpires who have officiated at least one men's One Day International (ODI) match. As of October 2022, 418 umpires have officiated in an ODI match. The first ODI match took place on 5 January 1971 between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The umpires for this game were Tom Brooks and Lou Rowan. In April 2019, Claire Polosak became the first woman to stand in men's ODI match, when she was one of the on-field umpires for the final of the 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament. Three umpires, Rudi Koertzen of South Africa, Billy Bowden of New Zealand and Aleem Dar of Pakistan, have officiated in 200 or more ODI matches. Run Out
Run out is a method of dismissal in cricket, governed by Law 38 of the Laws of Cricket. A run out usually occurs when the batsmen are attempting to run between the wickets, and the fielding team succeed in getting the ball to one wicket before a batsman has crossed the crease line near the wicket. The incomplete run the batsmen were attempting does not count. Laws A batsman is out run out if, at any time while the ball is in play, no part of his bat or person is grounded behind the popping crease and his wicket is fairly put down by the opposing side. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar (; ; born 24 April 1973) is an Indian former international cricketer who captained the Indian national team. He is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He is the all time highest run-scorer in both ODI and Test Format with more than 18000 runs and 15000 runs respectively in total. Third Umpire
The third umpire (or TV Umpire) is an off-field umpire used in some cricket matches, particularly international matches. Their role is to make the final decision in questions referred to them by the two on-field umpires or the players. The third umpire is also there to act as an emergency on-field umpire if required.
