Cyprus In The Eurovision Song Contest 2006
Cyprus participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with the song "Why Angels Cry" written by Peter Yiannakis. The song was performed by Annet Artani. The Cypriot broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) organised the national final ''A Song for Europe'' in order to select the Cypriot entry for the 2006 contest in Athens, Greece. The national final featured 20 entries and consisted of two semi-finals and a final, resulting in the selection of Annet Artani with "Why Angels Cry" at the final on 22 February 2008. Cyprus competed in the semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest which took place on 18 May 2006. Performing during the show in position 9, "Why Angels Cry" was not announced among the top 10 entries of the semi-final and therefore did not qualify to compete in the final. Annette Denise Stamatelatos (born 6 September 1976), better known by her stage name Annet Artani (Αννέτ Αρτάνη in Greek), is a Greek-American singer and songwriter. She is best known for representing Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with the song " Why Angels Cry", as well as co-writing the worldwide hit "Everytime" with Britney Spears. Artani was signed to Ultra Records and her debut single "Alive" was released in March 2009. Early life Artani was born Annette Denise Stamatelatos in Flushing, New York to Gregory and Julia Stamatelatos. Her family originates from the village of Karavados on the island of Kefalonia, Greece. She is named after her maternal grandmother, Anneta, and she chose to use her paternal grandmother's first name, Artani, in her stage name, as a dedication to both of them. For the Eurovision Song Contest 1998, Malta entered "The One That I Love", performed by Chiara. Before Eurovision National final The final was held on 6 and 7 February 1998 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, hosted by Angela Agius, John Demanuele, Denise Mintoff and Patrick Vella. On the first night, 22 songs were presented, 6 of which were in a special category for newcomers to the contest. Those 6 were reduced to 4 after the first night, so that on the second night there were 20 songs. Valando Tryfonos (Greek: Βαλάντω Τρύφωνος; born 6 March 1988), is a Greek–Cypriot singer who rose to fame after winning the first season of talent show ''Greek Idol'' in 2010. John Themis is an Australian-born musician, songwriter and record producer, best known for his long-term work with Boy George and Culture Club, collaborating on many of their songs and albums since the 1990s. He also worked on ''Taboo'', a musical roughly based on Boy George's life. Eleftheria Eleftheriou ( el, Ελευθερία Ελευθερίου; ; born 12 May 1989) is a Greek-Cypriot singer, musician, and actress. She came to prominence through her participation in the second season of the Greek version of ''The X Factor''.
