Cygnet River is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on Kangaroo Island about south-west of the state capital of Adelaide and about from the municipal seat of Kingscote. Its boundaries were created in 2002 in respect to “the long established name” which is reported to be derived from the stream located within its boundaries. Cygnet River is located within the federal division of Mayo, the state electoral district of Mawson and the local government area of the Kangaroo Island Council. Land use The major land use within the locality is primary production. The locality also includes the Kingscote Airport and the Cygnet Estuary Conservation Park. Kingscote Airport
Kingscote Airport is located southwest of Kingscote, South Australia, the main town on Kangaroo Island, in the locality of Cygnet River, South Australia, Cygnet River. The airport is the sole airport for Kangaroo Island. The airport is served by regular public transport and many charter flights. The airport is managed by the Kangaroo Island Council, which has operated the airport since 16 June 1983. A runway upgrade and new terminal building were completed in May 2018, and officially opened by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Premier of South Australia, Steven Marshall, on 4 July 2018. ''Cygnet'' was a barque built in 1827. It was long with a beam of and draught of . It sailed as part of the First Fleet of South Australia in 1836. ''Cygnet'' was built by John Gilmore and Company at Sulkea (across the Hooghly River from Calcutta) in India, and the primary material was teak. It first sailed from Calcutta to Singapore and Batavia. It then traded to Madras and Bombay before heading to London under Captain Morce in 1829.
