Cycling At The 1948 Summer Olympics – Men's Team Pursuit
The men's team pursuit cycling event at the 1948 Summer Olympics took place on 7 to 9 August and was one of six events at the 1948 Olympics. Results First round The first round took place on 7 August. The winning team from each heat advanced to the quarterfinals. Since the number of teams made it impossible for the Finnish team to compete against another team, it was determined that their time must beat that of the fastest losing team in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals. Since Australia's 5:06.05 time beat Finland's 5:17.4 time, Australia advanced to the quarterfinals. Herne Hill Velodrome
The Herne Hill Velodrome is a velodrome in Herne Hill, in south London. It is one of the oldest cycling tracks in the world, having been built in 1891. It hosted the track cycling events in the 1948 Summer Olympics and was briefly the home of Crystal Palace Football Club during World War I. Between 1987, when the track at Paddington Recreation Ground was demolished, and 2011, when the London Velopark for the 2012 Summer Olympics opened, Herne Hill was the only track in London. The cycling competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London consisted of two road cycling events and four track cycling events, all for men only. The track cycling events were held at the Herne Hill Velodrome in south London. The road race events were held in Windsor Great Park, south of Windsor. Walter Bucher (cyclist)
Walter Bucher (born 8 June 1926) is a Swiss retired cyclist. He competed in the team pursuit event at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Between 1955 and 1959 he won a medal at every UCI Motor-paced World Championships, including a gold medal in 1958.
