Cuong Vu
Cuong Vu (born 19 September 1969) is a Vietnamese-American jazz trumpeter. In addition to his own work as a bandleader, Vu was a member of the Pat Metheny Group. Biography Born in Saigon on September 19, 1969, Vu immigrated to Seattle with his family when he was six. At 11 he began to play the trumpet. He received a scholarship from the New England Conservatory of Music. After graduating Vu moved to New York City in 1994, and formed the group Ragged Jack with Jamie Saft, Andrew D'Angelo, and Jim Black. Vu has worked with Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, Dave Douglas, Myra Melford, Gerry Hemingway, and Mitchell Froom. While a member of the Pat Metheny Group, Vu won two Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Album: '' Speaking of Now'' and '' The Way Up''. The Way Up
''The Way Up'' is the eleventh and final studio album by the Pat Metheny Group. It was released in 2005 and won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 2006. It is the last Pat Metheny album to feature long-time collaborator Lyle Mays. Background The album consists of one 68-minute-long piece, split into four tracks. The album is a showcase for the band's ability in solo improvisation and dynamics. Swiss multi-instrumentalist Gregoire Maret joined the Group for the album's recording and tour, being showcased on the harmonica. As part of the album's promotional tour, the Group performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival and a concert was recorded in South Korea and released on DVD. Matthias Lupri
Matthias Albrecht Lupri (born 29 October 1964 in Germany) is a jazz musician who plays the vibraphone. History Lupri grew up in Manhattan, Kansas, and Alberta, Canada. Initially he played the drums, and as a teenager played in blues, rock, and country music bands. In his early 20s he studied music at Mount Royal College, where he heard Gary Burton's recordings and became interested in jazz vibraphone music. Lupri practiced the instrument for the next five years while on the road with rock bands as a drummer. He then enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study with Gary Burton himself. Since graduating Lupri's CDs have charted in radio's Top 40 GAVIN, CMJ, and Chart Magazine Canada, and were heard on the TV show “ALIAS.” Lupri was also named as a rising artist on vibraphone in Down Beat critics poll for the 2nd time in 2005. Chris Speed
Chris Speed (born February 12, 1967) is an American saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer. Early life and career Speed grew up outside of Seattle and studied classical piano and clarinet from an early age. He later began studying jazz, took up the tenor saxophone, and performed in a local big band while in high school. Speed attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he founded Human Feel with Andrew D'Angelo, Jim Black, and Kurt Rosenwinkel; the band continued performing after his move to New York. Bobby Previte
Bobby Previte (born July 16, 1951 in Niagara Falls, New York) is a drummer, composer, and bandleader. He earned a degree in economics from the University at Buffalo, where he also studied percussion. He moved to New York City in 1979 and began professional relationships with John Zorn, Wayne Horvitz, and Elliott Sharp. Composer While Previte is a talented drummer he has also received critical acclaim for his "exceptional abilities as a composer and orchestrator."
