Cultural Commons Collecting Society
The Cultural Commons Collecting Society SCE mbH (C3S) is a European Cooperative Society which aims to create a Collecting Society for music. The project is currently coordinated and operated by ''OpenMusicContest.org'', a Düsseldorf-based association which considered it necessary to create a Collecting Society that would compete with GEMA which currently holds a monopoly on music licensing. C3S aims to be different from GEMA: All C3S members are allowed to vote in the members' assembly and will be able to choose which of their works they want to have handled by C3S and under which licenses. Accounting is intended to be fully automated. Initial funding for the project came from a crowd funding campaign that yielded 119,000 €. The project also got a positive rating at the "Digitales Medienland NRW" innovation competition. European Cooperative Society
The European Cooperative Society (SCE, for Latin ) is, in corporate law, a European cooperative type of company, established in 2006 and related to the Societas Europaea (SE). They may be established and may operate throughout the European Economic Area (including the European Union). The legal form was created to remove the need for cooperatives to establish a subsidiary in each member state of the European Union in which they operate, and to allow them to move their registered office and headquarters freely from one member state to another, keeping their legal identity and without having to register or wind up any legal persons. Copyrights can either be licensed or assigned by the owner of the copyright. A copyright collective (also known as a copyright society, copyright collecting agency, licensing agency or copyright collecting society or collective management organization) is a Non-governmental organization, non-governmental body created by copyright law or private agreement which licenses copyrighted works on behalf of the authors and engages in collective rights management. The Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte (GEMA; "Society for musical performing and mechanical reproduction rights") is a government-mandated collecting society and performance rights organization based in Germany, with administrative offices in Berlin and Munich. GEMA represents the usage rights stemming from authors' rights (e.g., mechanical licensing, broadcast licensing, synchronization licensing) for the musical works of those composers, lyricists, and publishers who are members in the organization. It is the only such institution in Germany and a member of BIEM and CISAC.
