Cryptoheros
''Cryptoheros'' is a genus of small cichlid fishes from Central America and southeast Mexico. They reach up to in length. Taxonomy and species The genus formerly contained nine species that had been included within the genus '' Archocentrus''. The convict cichlid has sometimes been placed within the genus ''Cryptoheros'' as well, but is now considered a member of the genus '' Amatitlania''. Several other species such as '' Amatitlania septemfasciata'' and '' Amatitlania sajica'' had also once been included within ''Cryptoheros''. FishBase currently recognizes four species in this genus: * '' Cryptoheros chetumalensis'' Schmitter-Soto, 2007 – Belize to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico * '' Cryptoheros cutteri'' ( Fowler, 1932) – Atlantic side of Honduras to Guatemala * '' Cryptoheros panamensis'' (Meek & Hildebrand, 1913) – Atlantic side of Panama * '' Cryptoheros spilurus'' ( Günther, 1862) (Blue-eye cichlid) – Lake Izabal drainage in Guatemala ''C. panamenis ...

Convict Cichlid
The convict cichlid (''Amatitlania nigrofasciata'') is a fish species from the family Cichlidae, native to Central America, also known as the zebra cichlid. Convict cichlids are popular aquarium fish and have also been the subject of numerous studies on fish behaviour. Taxonomy Albert Günther originally described the species in 1867 after Frederick DuCane Godman and Osbert Salvin collected specimens in Central America. In 2007, the species was moved from the genus '' Archocentrus'' to a new genus, '' Amatitlania'', based on Juan Schmitter-Soto's study of ''Archocentus'' species. However, a 2008 study led by Oldřich Říčan proposed moving the species in ''Cryptoheros'' and ''Amatitlania'', including ''Amatitlania nigrofasciata'' into the genus '' Hypsophrys''. The convict cichlid, as traditionally defined, displays significant color variations across its range. Some of these regional variants are now considered different species. One of these is ''A. siquia'', the Honduran ...

Amatitlania
''Amatitlania'' is a genus of cichlid fishes native to freshwater habitats in Central America from El Salvador and Guatemala to Panama. They are fairly small cichlids, typically reaching up to in standard length depending on exact species, although captives may grow larger. Several ''Amatitlania'' species are regularly kept in aquariums, especially the convict cichlids, which are aggressively territorial, but some others in the genus are less pugnacious. Some ''Amatitlania'' species have small ranges and are considered threatened, primarily due to habitat loss and pollution. Four are regarded as priority species in the CARES program, which aims to ensure their survival through captive breeding. Taxonomy and species ''Amatitlania'' is closely related to '' Archocentrus'' and ''Cryptoheros'', and among others contains the convict cichlids that were previously placed in those genera. The genus was erected by Juan Schmitter-Soto in 2007 based on a study of the ''Archocentrus'' com ...

Amatitlania Sajica
''Amatitlania sajica'', the T-bar cichlid or Sajica cichlid, is a Central American species of cichlid found in freshwater streams and lakes on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica. The fish is tan colored with seven indistinct bars on the body. The third bar is usually prominent and coupled with a dark lateral stripe running from the gill cover results in a horizontal T-shaped mark, hence the common name of T-bar cichlid. Environment The T-bar cichlid inhabits rivers which have moderate to strong currents in Costa Rica at up to 2000 feet of elevation, but they are not found in the rapids. They prefer smaller rocks and gravel. They are omnivorous, feeding on algal filaments, aquatic insects, seeds and bottom detritus. Breeding Male ''A. sajica'' reach to 12 cm. Mature females that are ready to spawn have a beautiful golden yellow color on their dorsal and anal fins. These fish exhibits a number of different cichlid spawning behaviors including cave spawning (most common) ...

Amatitlania Septemfasciata
''Amatitlania septemfasciata'' (sometimes called the Seven-stripe Cichlid or Cutter's Cichlid) is a fish species in the cichlid family. It is found on the Atlantic slope of Costa Rica, between the San Juan River drainage and the Banano River. Several currently recognized cichlid species within the genus ''Amatitlania'' were formerly considered varieties of ''Amatitlania septumfasciata'', including '' Amatitlania myrnae'', the Topaz Cichlid, and '' Amatitlania cutteri'' (which also sometimes uses the common name "Cutter's Cichlid"). Prior to being placed in the genus ''Amatitlania'', it had been considered a member of the genus ''Archocentrus''. Within ''Amatitlania,'' ''Amatitlania septemfasciata'' is placed in the subgenus '' Bussingius'', along with the T-bar Cichlid and several other species. However, a 2008 study led by Oldřich Říčan has suggested that all the related species ''A. septemfasciatus'', should be moved into the genus ''Hypsophrys''. Natural history ' ...

Heroini
Heroini is a fish tribe from the Cichlasomatinae subfamily in the cichlid family. All cichlids native to the Greater Antilles, United States (southern Texas), Mexico and northern Central America are members of this tribe. It also includes most cichlid species in southern Central America (where only non-Heroini cichlids are ''Andinoacara'' and ''Geophagus'') and several species from South America (where several other tribes exist). A large percentage of its species were formerly placed in the genus ''Cichlasoma'' (itself now placed in the tribe Cichlasomatini), but have since been moved to other genera. In other classifications the tribe Heroini is placed in the subfamily Cichlinae. Abstract Genera This tribe include about 35 genus and 160 species: * '' Amatitlania'' Schmitter-Soto, 2007 * ''Amphilophus'' Agassiz, 1859 * '' Archocentrus'' Gill, 1877 * ''Astatheros'' Pellegrin, 1904 * ''Australoheros'' Říčan & Kullander, 2006 * ''Caquetaia'' Fowler, 1945 * ''Chiapaheros'' M ...

Archocentrus
''Archocentrus'' is a genus of cichlid fish from Central America. It currently contains a single species, the flier cichlid (''Archocentrus centrarchus''), which is found in stagnant and slow-moving freshwater habitats such as lakes, ponds, ditches, swamps and rivers in Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. It is up to long and feeds on invertebrates and detritus. ''Archocentrus'' formerly included some of the species now included in the genera ''Cryptoheros'' and ''Amatitlania'', such as the convict cichlid. Cichlid
Cichlids are fish from the family Cichlidae in the order Cichliformes. Cichlids were traditionally classed in a suborder, the Labroidei, along with the wrasses ( Labridae), in the order Perciformes, but molecular studies have contradicted this grouping. The closest living relative of cichlids is probably the convict blenny, and both families are classified in the 5th edition of ''Fishes of the World'' as the two families in the Cichliformes, part of the subseries Ovalentaria. This family is both large and diverse. At least 1,650 species have been scientifically described, making it one of the largest vertebrate families. New species are discovered annually, and many species remain undescribed. The actual number of species is therefore unknown, with estimates varying between 2,000 and 3,000. Many cichlids, particularly tilapia, are important food fishes, while others, such as the ''Cichla'' species, are valued game fish. The family also includes many popular freshwater aquariu ...
