Croydon Common
Croydon Common Football Club was an amateur and, later on, professional football club based in Croydon. History The team formed in 1897 as an amateur church team competing in local leagues. They turned professional in 1907, joining the Southern League Second Division. A final place of third was achieved despite the stand at the Crescent being burnt down. A move was made to the Nest (future home of Crystal Palace) in 1908 where promotion to the Southern League First Division was achieved. In the FA Cup, Football League members Bradford Park Avenue were beaten and Woolwich Arsenal taken to a replay before final defeat. An immediate return was made to the Second Division after finishing second from bottom. At the new ground another main stand was damaged; the roof being removed in a gale. Croydon Common Athletic Ground
Croydon Common Athletic Ground, commonly referred to as the Nest, was a association football, football stadium in Selhurst, south London. The original occupiers of the ground were Croydon Common F.C., the Robins, who occupied it from 1908 to 1917. It was also the home ground of Crystal Palace F.C. from 1918 until 1924. The Nest was subleased from the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, the parties being The Croydon Common Football and Athletic Company Limited and then Crystal Palace Football and Athletic Club, The London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England. The reason for three parties to this lease was that the Ecclesiastical Commissioners actually owned the land, the Railway Company had leased it from them and thus the club was subleasing it from the Railway Company. Harry Dawson (association Footballer)
Harold Dawson (born 1886) was an English professional footballer. An outside left, he played in the Football League for Everton and Blackpool. Career After a spell at Croydon Common, Dawson played his first Southern League First Division game for West Ham United on 16 March 1912, against Luton Town. He scored on his home debut a week later, against Bristol Rovers. He scored his second goal for West Ham in the first game of the 1912–13 season, against Exeter City, and his third and final goal for the club also came against West Country opposition when he scored against Plymouth Argyle on 5 October 1912. William Balmer
Billy Balmer (29 July 1875 – February 1961) was an English footballer who played as a right-back for Everton, as well as the England national side. His brother Bob played alongside him for Everton and his nephew was Jack Balmer. Career Balmer was a tough-tackling full-back. He joined Everton in 1897 from South Shore and went on to play 331 games, scoring one goal. His brother Bob – four years his junior – also played for Everton. His nephew, Jack, attained fame with local rivals Liverpool. His only England appearance came in a 1–1 draw with Ireland in 1905. Balmer spent the 1909–10 and 1910–11 seasons in the Southern League with Croydon Common, making 64 appearances and scoring four goals.
