The Victoria Racing Club Oaks (known as the Kennedy Oaks for sponsorship reasons), is a Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old fillies, run under set weights conditions, over 2,500 metres at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia on the third day of the VRC Spring Carnival, the Thursday after the Melbourne Cup in early November. Flemington Racecourse
Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200-metre horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840. Overview The Flemington Racecourse site comprises 1.27 square kilometres of Crown land. The course was originally leased to the Victoria Turf Club in 1848, which merged with the Victoria Jockey Club in 1864 to form the Victoria Racing Club. The first Melbourne Cup was run in 1861. Miss Finland (horse)
Miss Finland is a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. She is a bay mare sired by Redoute's Choice out of Forest Pearl, who was a daughter of The Oaks winner Moonshell. Miss Finland was trained by top South Australian trainer David Hayes. At the age of two years, she won the AAMI Golden Slipper, the world's richest juvenile race, which is run over 1,200 metres, and ran second in the Blue Diamond Stakes. The Spring Racing Carnival is the name of an Australian Thoroughbred horse racing series held annually in Melbourne during October and November. Auraria (foaled 1892) was an Australian racehorse that won the 1895 Melbourne Cup. Racing career Auraria was bred at St Albans stud in Victoria and bought for 280 guineas by David James of Kapunda. She raced 10 times as a two-year-old for six wins, three seconds and a fourth. Evening Peal was a notable Australian thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1956 Melbourne Cup, being ridden by George Podmore. Having run second in the Caulfield Cup to the New Zealand champion Redcraze she was sent out a 15/1 chance. Light Fingers
Light Fingers (1961−1988) was a New Zealand bred thoroughbred racehorse who won the Melbourne Cup in 1965. In 2017 Light Fingers was inducted to the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Background The lightly built chestnut was by the highly successful sire of stayers, Le Filou, from Cuddlesome by Red Mars (GB) by Hyperion (GB). She was originally called Close Embrace in New Zealand, but the Australian registrar would not allow that name to be used. Trained by Bart Cummings, Light Fingers would become the first of his 12 Melbourne Cup winners. Cummings had tried to buy the filly on a visit to New Zealand but was unsuccessful. Research was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who as a three-year-old carved out a unique place in Australian racing history by becoming the only filly to win the AJC Derby-AJC Oaks double. Bred at Newhaven Park Stud, Boorowa, NSW she was sired by Imperial Prince (IRE) and her dam Outing was by Boucher. Research was trained by Warwick Farm-based trainer Clarrie Conners.
