Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus * lij, Cristoffa C(or)ombo * es, link=no, Cristóbal Colón * pt, Cristóvão Colombo * ca, Cristòfor (or ) * la, Christophorus Columbus. (; born between 25 August and 31 October 1451, died 20 May 1506) was an Italian explorer and navigator who completed Voyages of Christopher Columbus, four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean sponsored by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, opening the way for the widespread European Age of Discovery, exploration and colonization of the Americas. His expeditions were the first known European contact with the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The name ''Christopher Columbus'' is the anglicisation of the Latin . Scholars generally agree that Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa and spoke a dialect of Ligurian (Romance language), Ligurian as his first language. He went to sea at a young age and travelled widely, as far north as the British Isles and as far south as what is now Ghana. He married Port ...

Cristoforo Colombo (opera)
''Cristoforo Colombo'' (''Christopher Columbus'', ) is an opera in four acts and an epilogue by Alberto Franchetti to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica. It was written in 1892 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in America. Commissioned by the city of Genoa, Columbus' birthplace, the opera deals with the voyage of discovery, its opposition by the Spanish authorities, Columbus' encouragement by Queen Isabella, and finally, after his difficulties and triumph, his anguish when he learns of her death. An essentially melodic opera only tangentially influenced by the emerging verismo style, it is harmonically rich, with obvious references to the work of Richard Wagner and Meyerbeer. The act 2 monologue contains a Rhine-like motif; after cries of ''Terra! Terra!'' the orchestra replies with Tristan-like ecstasy, and then a rainbow bridge-like triumph. Its anti-church elements have been noted, particularly in the opera's earlier versions: it is the c ...

SS Cristoforo Colombo
SS ''Cristoforo Colombo'' () was an Italian ocean liner built in the 1950s, sister ship of the . Origins and construction The origins of the ''Cristoforo Colombo'' lie in the situation of the Italian Line at the end of World War II. The war had been devastating to them, as two of their newest and largest ships – the and – had been destroyed. The Italian Line at this point decided to build only moderately-sized ships that were very luxurious, comfortable, and stylish. The ''Cristoforo Colombo'' was built in Genoa at the Ansaldo Shipyards. The ''Andrea Doria'' was already built by the time ''Cristoforo Colombo'' was completed. She was launched in 1953 and was ready for a 1954 maiden voyage. When launched, the ''Cristoforo Colombo'' was larger than the ''Andrea Doria''. Hence, the ship was the largest merchant ship in Italian service. Italian Line service After the ''Andrea Doria'' was sunk after a collision with the in 1956, the ''Cristoforo Colombo'' was on her own un ...

Italian Corvette Cristoforo Colombo (1892)
''Cristoforo Colombo'' was a steel-hulled corvette built in the early 1890s for the Italian ''Regia Marina'' (Royal Navy). The ship was built as a replacement for an earlier vessel of the same name, based on a nearly identical design. The new ship was intended to serve in Italy's colonial empire in eastern Africa, and was designed to be able to operate at long range, far from home ports, for an extended period of time. The ''Regia Marina'' ultimately sold the ship in March 1907, though her ultimate fate is unknown. Design In the late 1880s, the Italian ''Regia Marina''s chief designer, Benedetto Brin, prepared the design for a new screw corvette to replace the earlier , which was by then more than a decade old. The new vessel is sometimes referred to as a reconstruction of the original vessel, but they were in fact distinct ships. That vessel's wooden hull had been superseded by newer steel-hulled ships like and that had been completed in the early 1880s. Brin's new design w ...

Soviet Training Ship Dunay
''Dunay'' was a tall ship serving with the Soviet Navy, first launched as ''Cristoforo Colombo'', laid at the Castellammare yards on 15 April 1926. It was destroyed in a fire in 1963. History In 1925, the ''Regia Marina'' (Italian Royal Navy) ordered two school ships to a design by General Lieutenant Francesco Rotundi of the Italian Navy Engineering Corps, inspired by the style of large late 18th century 74-gun ships of the line. The first, ''Cristoforo Colombo'', was put into service in 1928 and was used by the ''Regia Marina'' until 1943. After World War II, the ship was handed over to the Soviet Union as part of the war reparations demanded by the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty, and was decommissioned in 1959. The second ship was , launched in 1931 and still in service. Via Cristoforo Colombo
Via Cristoforo Colombo (or just ''la Colombo'', as it is often called by the Romans; ) is a street in Rome (Italy) that links the historic centre to Ostia. Along most of its route, the street has three lanes for each direction of movement. With its length it is the longest Italian road among those included within the borders of a single municipality and, in several stretches, the largest in Italy. Via Cristoforo Colombo starts from Porta Ardeatina and continues south-west, ending on the coast in the district of Castel Fusano. History The street was designed in 1937 with the name of ''Via Imperiale'', as a part of the five-years plan of works associated to the 1941 World's fair of Rome: it should have linked the centre of the town to the new exhibition buildings (EUR) and then continue towards the ''Lido di Roma'', according to Mussolini's project of enlargement of Rome ''to the sea''. See Anna Maria Ramieri and Simone Quilici in the Bibliography section Route It starts fro ...
