Nuangola is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The population was 663 as of the 2020 census. Developed as a summer resort in the early 20th century, the borough is built around a heart-shaped lake called Nuangola Lake. History Origin of name The name ''Nuangola'' probably derives from an Algonquian language, which was spoken by the indigenous Native Americans of the area (most likely the Delaware (Lenape), the region's largest tribe. Some Nanticoke and Shawnee also lived there at the time). According to legend, a Native American maiden named Nuangola is believed to have drowned in the lake. Another account says that Nuangola is a Native American word (probably from an Algonquian language) for "Three-Cornered Lake" or "Triangular Lake." Early settlers named its this, but the name was changed to Nuangola to avoid confusion with other towns in Pennsylvania. It has also been suggested that ''Nuangola'' means "people of the north." Penn Lake Park is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 359 at the 2020 census. History The community was founded in 1938, after ice salesman Albert Lewis used the lake to chip out his product. In 1946, Harry and Mary Goeringer bought the lake — and the 800 acres around it — from Lewis. They built a house by the lake; they later divided the rest of the land into parcels. It became a borough in 1976, when Penn Lake Park applied for a state grant because the lake's dam needed a major repair. Geography Penn Lake Park is located at . White Haven is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It is located along the Lehigh River. The population was 1,163 at the 2020 census. History Establishment White Haven was created in 1824 by industrialist Josiah White. It was later incorporated as a borough in 1842. Coal mining and railroads Early European explorers to the Wyoming Valley encountered a new form of coal — anthracite — that was abundant throughout the region. At the time, anthracite was a valuable commodity without a good use. It wasn't until February 11, 1808, when Wilkes-Barre Judge Jesse Fell created the first iron grate in the valley to successfully burn anthracite. Dennison Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 961 at the 2020 census. History It is believed that Israel Inman was the first white settler in the township. He traveled up Nescopeck Creek from its mouth in 1833. The next party after Inman was the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. In 1837, they cut a road through the township in order to get to Wilkes-Barre. This was succeeded by the construction of railroads in the following decades. Dennison Township was formed from a section of the original Hanover Township in 1839. Dorrance Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,077 at the 2020 census. History Founding It's believed that the township's first white settlers were hunters and fishermen. They were soon followed by lumberjacks. The community bears the name of Col. George Dorrance, who was killed in the Battle of Wyoming on July 3, 1778. Following the battle, settlers began to move into what is now Dorrance Township. The township was officially formed in 1840, when it broke away from Newport Township. By 1860, over five hundred people lived within the township. In 1865, the community had several sawmills, gristmills, and at least one tavern. Dorrance Village is the only hamlet in the township; it is located near the center of the community. Fairview Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,691 at the 2020 census. History Founding In the late 18th century, Conrad Wickeiser was the first settler in modern-day Fairview Township. He was followed by James Wright, who built the first tavern and the first sawmill in 1820. Additional sawmills were constructed throughout the area. Logging was one of the chief industries in the area. In September 1888, the court appointed several commissioners to examine and report whether or not dividing Wright Township would be feasible. One in particular is held around the second weekend in October. Many gather for a Wingfest which has grown over the years. The fest includes daylong activities and nighttime shenanigans. Slocum Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,053 at the 2020 census. History The Lutsey family settled in what is now Slocum Township in 1785. They established the first settlement (known as the “Lutsey Settlement”). Others followed in their footsteps and colonized the territory. A sawmill was erected by John Rosencrans in 1836. Wright Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,726 at the 2020 census. History Wright Township was formed from a piece of Hanover Township in 1851. It was named in honor of Col. Hendrick B. Wright of Wilkes-Barre. In 1798, Conrad Wickeiser was the first settler in the region. Crestwood High School is a ninth through twelfth grade, suburban, public high school located on Route 309 in Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the only high school in the Crestwood School District, which encompasses an area of with a combined population of 19,383. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2016–2017, Crestwood High School reported an enrollment of 883 pupils in grades 9th through 12th. Students at Crestwood High School may choose from numerous academic, athletic, and co-curricular programs, but mainly focusing on humanities, mathematics and science, business, fine arts, and vocational-technical programs.
