Crest Theatre
The Crest Theatre is a historic theatre located in downtown Sacramento, California. History It originally opened in 1912 as the Empress Theatre, and at that time was used as a vaudeville palace. It later became the Hippodrome. On September 14, 1946 the Hippodrome's marquee suddenly fell to the pavement below, killing a bystander, Mrs. Jessie Shirley Potter, 41, of Alta, who was crushed beneath the marquee. Joseph Brady, 40, was struck a glancing blow and sustained a skull fracture, broken collarbone, permanent brain injury and loss of hearing in one ear. Damages of $176,334.50 were sought by Potter's family and by Brady in superior court. Shortly after the tragedy, in 1949, the building was completely remodeled and revamped to its current form as the Crest Theatre. Vaudeville (; ) is a theatrical genre of variety entertainment born in France at the end of the 19th century. Sacramento French Film Festival
The Sacramento French Film Festival is an annual film festival founded in 2001 held on the last two weekends of June at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento, California. It celebrates the present as well as the rich history of French cinema featuring new releases and rarely seen classics. It is the only festival dedicated to French cinema in Northern California and one of only two on the West coast. It was described in the ''Sacramento Bee'' in July 2003, as “the Cinematic Highlight of Sacramento's Summer”. The SFFF opens each year on a Friday night with a catered reception followed by the opening film. Films continue all day long Saturday and Sunday for two consecutive weekends. Midnight movies are presented on Saturdays for mature audiences. The Festival ends on a Sunday night with an informal champagne cocktail following the closing film. The Sacramento Film and Music Festival (SF&MF) is a large, multi-day, all-genre international film festival held in Sacramento, California in the United States. It has been in operation since 2000. The festival's mission is to celebrate filmmaking from around the world and sponsor the art of film in California's Capital region. History For the 2011 season, the festival's 12th, the event was divided into two parts with the WinterFEST January 15–17 and the SummerFEST August 18–21. The WinterFEST dates coincided with the Martin Luther King holiday weekend and in addition to the usual range of film programming, the program documentaries with themes of politics, peace, and social justice including "Sowing the Seeds of Justice" about the life and legal career of Cruz Reynoso. Alhambra Theatre (Sacramento)
The Alhambra Theatre opened in 1927 and was the preeminent movie house in the greater Sacramento area for many years. It was designed in the Moorish style of the great Spanish cities and included a large courtyard and fountain. The interior was lavishly appointed with red carpet, gold trim, and large pillars. It was located directly beyond the eastern terminus of K Street at 1025 Thirty-First Street, now Alhambra Boulevard, Sacramento, California 95816, in the East Sacramento neighborhood. The theatre was designed by Starks and Flanders, a firm which was founded in Sacramento by New Yorker Leonard Starks in 1922 and designed many other important structures, including the Fox-Senator Theatre, the Elks Building, C. Tower Theatre (Sacramento, California)
The Tower Theatre, built in 1938, is a Sacramento, California landmark and the oldest remaining, continuously running picture palace. The theater was designed by California theater architect William B. David in the Streamline Moderne style of architecture. The original owner was Joseph Blumenfeld, a second generation theatre owner. At the time, there was only one movie screen. The first movie shown was ''Algiers''. The theatre was renovated in 1972 and divided into a three screen cinema.
