Crateromys Paulus
The Ilin Island cloudrunner (''Crateromys paulus'') is a critically endangered cloud rat from Ilin Island in the Philippines. It is called ''siyang'' by the Taubuwid Mangyan. It is a fluffy-coated, bushy-tailed rat and may have emerged from tree hollows at night to feed on fruits and leaves. Guy Musser
Guy Graham Musser (August 10, 1936 – October 2019) was an American zoologist. His main research was in the field of the rodent subfamily Murinae, in which he has described many new species. Musser was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended elementary and secondary public schools until 1955 and in 1967 obtained a PhD at the University of Michigan with a thesis about the taxonomy of the Mexican gray squirrel (''Sciurus aureogaster''). In 1966 he joined the American Museum of Natural History where he became curator of mammals. Since his retirement in 2002 he is curator emeritus. In the 1960s and 1970s he published numerous articles on squirrels, Neotominae and Murinae. In the 1970s he conducted a three-year expedition to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi where he discovered several new mice and rat species. The cloud rats or cloudrunners are a tribe (Phloeomyini) of arboreal and nocturnal herbivorous rodents endemic to the cloud forests of the Philippines. They belong to the family Muridae and include five genera: '' Batomys'' (hairy-tailed rats), ''Carpomys'' (dwarf cloud rats), '' Crateromys'' (bushy-tailed cloud rats), '' Musseromys'' (Luzon tree mice), and ''Phloeomys'' (giant cloud rats). They range in size from as large as to as small as . Cloud rats are threatened by habitat loss and illegal hunting. Several species are endangered or critically endangered. Description Cloud rats are characterized by long furry or hairy tails and short hind limbs with grasping feet. Ilin Island is a small island in the Philippines. Measuring , it is just south of Mindoro, separated by the Ilin Strait and Mangarin Bay. To the west is the smaller Ambulong Island, across the Ambulong Strait. Politically, the island is part of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, and is divided into ten barangays, namely: Ansiray, Bankal (Bangkal), Buri, Catayungan, Ilin (Iling Proper), Inasakan, Ipil, Labangan Ilin, Natandol and Pawican. The Tawbuid language is a language spoken by Tawbuid Mangyans in the province of Mindoro in the Philippines. It is divided into eastern and western dialects. The Bangon Mangyans also speak the western dialect of Tawbuid. Geographic distribution The Tau-buid (or Tawbuid) Mangyans live in central Mindoro. In Oriental Mindoro, Eastern Tawbuid (also known as Bangon) is spoken by 1,130 people in the municipalities of Socorro, Pinamalayan, and Gloria. Mangyan
Mangyan is the generic name for the eight indigenous groups found on the island of Mindoro, southwest of the island of Luzon, the Philippines, each with its own tribal name, language, and customs. The total population may be around 280,001, but official statistics are difficult to determine under the conditions of remote areas, reclusive tribal groups and some having little if any outside world contact. The ethnic groups of the island, from north to south, are: Iraya, Alangan, Tadyawan, Tawbuid (called Batangan by lowlanders on the west of the island), Buhid, and Hanunoo. An additional group on the south coast is labelled Ratagnon. They appear to be intermarried with lowlanders. The group known on the east of Mindoro as Bangon may be a subgroup of Tawbuid, as they speak the 'western' dialect of that language. They also have a kind of poetry which is called the Ambahan.
