Craig Francis Power is a Canadian writer and artist from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.Joan Sullivan"Perilous world depicted in ‘Skeet Love’" ''The Telegram'', August 26, 2017. His debut novel, ''Blood Relatives'', won the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador's Fresh Fish Award in 2007, and the Percy Janes First Novel Award for unpublished manuscripts in 2008. It was published in 2010, was short-listed for the BMO Winterset Award that year, and won the ReLit Award for Fiction in 2011. His second novel, '' The Hope'', was published in 2016, and was again a ReLit Award finalist. His third novel, '' Skeet Love'', followed in 2017. In 2018 he served as a judge for the Governor General's Award for English-language fiction, and for the CBC Short Story Prize. Sobey Art Award
The Sobey Art Award is Canada's largest prize for young Canadian artists. It is named after Canadian businessperson and art collector Frank H. Sobey, who established The Sobey Art Foundation. It is an annual prize given to an artist 40 and under who has exhibited in a public or commercial art gallery within 18 months of being nominated. A jury consisting of an international juror and representatives of galleries from the West Coast and the Yukon, the Prairies and the North, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces creates a longlist of 25 artists, five from each region. The jury meets to select the winner and four other finalists, one from each region. 2017 was the first year to see the shortlist dominated by women and also the first year that more than one Indigenous artist was shortlisted. Hooked Rug
Rug hooking is both an art and a craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff woven base such as burlap, linen, or rug warp. The loops are pulled through the backing material by using a crochet-type hook mounted in a handle (usually wood) for leverage. In contrast latch-hooking uses a hinged hook to form a knotted pile from short, pre-cut pieces of yarn. Wool strips ranging in size from 3/32 to 10/32 of an inch (2 to 8 mm) in width are often used to create hooked rugs or wall hangings. These precision strips are usually cut using a mechanical cloth slitter; however, the strips can also be hand-cut or torn. When using the hand-torn technique the rugs are usually done in a primitive motif.
