Covington Lumberjacks
The Covington Lumberjacks are a collegiate summer baseball team in Covington, Virginia. They play in the Valley Baseball League. The team was founded in 2001 and the Lumberjacks play their home games at Casey Field in downtown Covington. Since joining the league in 2001,the Lumberjacks claim two league titles in 2005 and 2011. They were league runners-up in 2008 and 2009 and most recently won the leagues Southern Division regular season title in 2018. The Lumberjacks have been consistent in having alumni drafted in the major leagues, including several who have had substantial MLB careers. Valley Baseball League
The Valley Baseball League is an NCAA and MLB-sanctioned collegiate summer baseball league in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia. The league was started in 1923 and sanctioned by the NCAA in 1961. It has been a wooden bat league since 1993. It is one of almost a dozen leagues in the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball. The VBL is funded in part by a grant from Major League Baseball. The Valley League has produced well over 1,000 professional baseball players, including a record 79 former players drafted in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. In 2007, the Valley Baseball League expanded to include one new team with the addition of the Fauquier Gators. Another team was planned to be added in Lexington, Virginia but difficulties with the lighting system delayed the team's addition to the league. Craig Tatum
Craig Browning Tatum (born March 18, 1983) is a retired American professional baseball catcher. He played in Major League Baseball for the Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles from 2009 through 2011. Early years Tatum attended Hattiesburg High School where he played baseball as a catcher and pitcher. He was named the Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year after hitting a team-best .435 with 51 hits and 54 Runs Batted In. He had a 7-3 pitching record with a save and a 3.94 earned run average and 80 strikeouts College career Tatum attended Mississippi State University, where he played for the Mississippi State Bulldogs baseball team. Sherman Johnson
Sherman Lee Johnson (born July 15, 1990) is an American former professional baseball infielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for one season with the Los Angeles Angels. He currently serves as the hitting coach for the Bowie Baysox in the Baltimore Orioles organization. Jose Carlos Guevara (born March 18, 1982) is an American former Major League Baseball pitcher . Early life and education Guevara played on the 2001 St. Mary's team which won the 2001 NCAA Division II College World Series. Professional career Cincinnati Reds Guevara was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the seventh round (201st overall) of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. After signing with the Reds, Guevara began his career with the Billings Mustangs of the rookie league. He started two games for the Mustangs, going 1-0 with a 0.82 earned run average and striking out 14 in 11 innings. Guevara finished his 2003 season with the Single-A Dayton Dragons. Brendan J. Katin (born January 28, 1983) is a professional baseball outfielder. Career Katin was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in both the 2001 and 2002 amateur drafts, but did not sign. Before beginning his professional career, Munson attended James Madison University and played college baseball for the James Madison Dukes. Covington is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,737, making it the second-least populous city in Virginia. Collin Brannen Cowgill (born May 22, 1986) is an American former professional baseball outfielder and current major league coach. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Oakland Athletics, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, and the Cleveland Indians. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs.
