Covenant Awards
The Covenant Awards are awarded to the Canadian gospel music industry by GMA Canada, the Gospel Music Association of Canada. The association is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the growth and ministry of Christian music in Canada. The ceremonies are held annually in cities across the nation. History GMA Canada created the Covenant Awards in 1974 in Ontario. At the beginning, it was mostly for gospel music. Over the years, all styles of Contemporary Christian music have been included. In 2008 the association released a special three-CD collection to commemorate its 30th anniversary, the '' GMA Canada presents 30th Anniversary Collection''. Downhere
Downhere (stylized as downhere) is a Christian rock band from Canada. They have released six studio albums to date: ''downhere'' (2001), ''So Much for Substitutes'' (2003), ''Wide-Eyed and Mystified'' (2006), ''Ending Is Beginning'' (2008), '' How Many Kings: Songs for Christmas'' (2009), and ''On the Altar of Love'' (2011) and have won several Juno and Covenant Awards. History The Early Years 1999–2001 The band was formed by Marc Martel and Jason Germain who were roommates at Briercrest Bible College in Caronport, Saskatchewan. In 1999 Martel and Germain added fellow Canadians Jeremy Thiessen and Tyson Manning, along with American Corey Doak, and released an eponymous debut album independently on Slyngshot Records. Tommy Hunter
Thomas James Hunter, CM, O.Ont (born March 20, 1937) is a Canadian country music performer, known as "Canada's Country Gentleman". Career In 1956, he began performing as a rhythm guitarist on the CBC Television show, '' Country Hoedown''. ''The Tommy Hunter Show'' began as a CBC Radio program in 1960, replacing the long-running variety show '' The Happy Gang'', and went on to replace ''Country Hoedown'' on CBC Television in 1965; Hunter's show was picked up by TNN in 1983 and ran on CBC until 1992. Performers on the show included singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot in the early years of his own musical career. Bec Abbot
Bec Abbot is a Canadian singer who performed and recorded Contemporary Christian music. Her album ''Shine Like Stars'' was nominated for the 2004 Juno Award for "Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year". Life As a girl, she sang publicly in front of her father's church. Local churches soon began calling her for Sunday mornings, banquets and special events. During High School, Abbot sang in choirs and for weddings. Rob Wilson, better known by his stage name Fresh I.E., is a Christian rap artist from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Biography Fresh I.E. is an ordained minister and used to run the Joshua House drop-in centre and Education Direction Inspiration for Youth (EDIFY) mentorship program at the Waves of Glory Church in Winnipeg, which is now based out of Soul Sanctuary Church in Winnipeg. His albums ''Red Letterz'' and ''Truth is Fallin' in tha Streetz'' were both nominated for Grammy Awards. Wilson is the first Canadian Christian artist to have been nominated for a Grammy Award. Greg Sczebel
Greg Sczebel (born September 6, 1984), known as SEBELL, is a two-time Juno Award-winning independent singer-songwriter originally from Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada. He is a two-time grand prize winner in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, a winner in the Billboard Worldwide Song Competition and was a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. In 2006 Sczebel was a special guest performer on CMT's "Paul Brandt's Christmas in Banff." In 2008 Sczebel joined Brandt's touring band and has performed with him regularly, playing keyboards and singing backing vocals.
