County Of Russell
The County of Russell is one of the 49 cadastral counties in South Australia. It was proclaimed in 1842 by Governor George Grey and named for Lord John Russell, who was involved in the early development of the (British) South Australian colony (at the time of the county's proclamation) when he was Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. It covers a portion of the state bounded to the west by the eastern half of Lake Alexandrina and the section of the Murray River extending to Bowhill in the north and bounded to the south by the coastline adjoining the Coorong coastal lagoon and fully surrounds Lake Albert which is excluded from its extent. This includes the north western quarter of the contemporary local government area of Coorong District Council. Pelican
Pelicans (genus ''Pelecanus'') are a genus of large water birds that make up the family Pelecanidae. They are characterized by a long beak and a large throat pouch used for catching prey and draining water from the scooped-up contents before swallowing. They have predominantly pale plumage, except for the brown and Peruvian pelicans. The bills, pouches, and bare facial skin of all pelicans become brightly coloured before the breeding season. The eight living pelican species have a patchy global distribution, ranging latitudinally from the tropics to the temperate zone, though they are absent from interior South America and from polar regions and the open ocean. Bowhill, South Australia
Bowhill is a locality in South Australia. A settlement is located inside a bend on the left (eastern/southern) bank of the Murray River between Mannum and Swan Reach. It is predominantly shacks built facing the river bank. The settlement is in the Mid Murray Council area, but most of the locality is located away from the river and within the District Council of Karoonda East Murray, including the Lowan Conservation Park. Bowhill is located in the local government area of District Council of Karoonda East Murray, the state electoral district of Hammond and the federal Division of Barker. The nearest crossings of the Murray River are the Mannum ferry downstream and the Purnong ferry by road upstream. Tailem Bend (locally, "Tailem") is a rural town in South Australia, south-east of the state capital of Adelaide. It is located on the lower reaches of the River Murray, near where the river flows into Lake Alexandrina. It is linear in layout since it is constrained by river cliffs on its western side and the Adelaide–Melbourne railway line is dominant on its eastern side. Burdett, South Australia
Burdett is a locality in South Australia located on the eastern side (left bank) of the Murray River about to the east of the city of Murray Bridge and about east south-east of the Adelaide city centre. Its name is derived from the Hundred of Burdett. While the name has been "long established," Burdett's current boundaries were established in 2000. The land within Burdett is used for agricultural purposes with the exception of the Australian Army field training area, the Murray Bridge Training Area, which occupies about of land at the locality's southern boundary. The Karoonda Highway passes through the locality on its way to Loxton. Burdett is located within the federal Division of Barker, the electoral district of Hammond and the local government areas of the Mid Murray Council and the Rural City of Murray Bridge. Younghusband is a small settlement on the left bank of the lower Murray River in South Australia near Mannum. There are views of Lake Carlet from the cliffs near the caravan park.
