County Of Buccleuch
The County of Buccleuch is one of the 49 cadastral counties of South Australia. It was proclaimed in 1893 and named for the sixth Duke of Buccleuch, William Scott, of Scotland. It is located east of the Murray River at the south western edge of the Mallee region. The small locality of Buccleuch and its railway station are located at the centre of the county. Coonalpyn, South Australia
Coonalpyn is a town and a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about south-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about south-east of the municipal seat in Tailem Bend. It is situated in the local government area of the Coorong District Council and is in the State electoratal district of MacKillop and the Federal division of Barker. At the 2016 census, the locality had a population of 353 of which 195 lived in its town centre. Origin of the name This town's name is derived from the Aboriginal word ''Coonalpyn'', meaning ''Barren Woman''. ''Coonalpyn Downs'' was chosen by John Barton Hack to name the property and the railway station within this property. History The town of Coonalpyn was proclaimed on 25 November 1909. Bowhill, South Australia
Bowhill is a locality in South Australia. A settlement is located inside a bend on the left (eastern/southern) bank of the Murray River between Mannum and Swan Reach. It is predominantly shacks built facing the river bank. The settlement is in the Mid Murray Council area, but most of the locality is located away from the river and within the District Council of Karoonda East Murray, including the Lowan Conservation Park. Bowhill is located in the local government area of District Council of Karoonda East Murray, the state electoral district of Hammond and the federal Division of Barker. The nearest crossings of the Murray River are the Mannum ferry downstream and the Purnong ferry by road upstream. Peake is a town and locality in the Australian state of South Australia situated along the Mallee Highway (B12), approximately east of the state capital of Adelaide. At the , Peake had a population of 117. History The town of Peake was proclaimed on 8 August 1907. It was surveyed during May 1907 and its name is derived from the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Peake which itself is derived from Archibald Henry Peake, a South Australian politician who served three terms as the Premier of South Australia. Along one of the major railway lines of the time, many settlers and travelers passed along the route. Hundred Of Roby
The Hundred of Roby is a hundred within the County of Buccleuch in the Mallee region of South Australia. The only township within the hundred is Coomandook, a settlement about east-south-east of Adelaide on Dukes Highway. Parts of the localities of Cooke Plains, Sherlock, Peake, and Yumali also lie within the hundred. Local government In 1911 the District Council of Peake was proclaimed and the Hundred of Roby became one of four wards within the new council area. When Peake was amalgamated with the district councils of Coonalpyn Downs and Meningie in 1997 the hundred became part of the much larger Coorong District Council Coorong District Council is a local government area in South Australia located between the River Murray and the Limestone Coast region. Karoonda, South Australia
Karoonda is a town in the middle of the Murray Mallee region of South Australia ( northeast of Murray Bridge). The current boundaries include the former town of Lowaldie, which was the next stop on the railway line away from Adelaide. At the 2016 census, the locality of Karoonda had a population of 512, of whom 351 were living in and around the town of Karoonda. History Karoonda takes its name from the Aboriginal word for "winter camp". The town was founded on wheat-growing early in the 20th century (proclaimed on 11 December 1913), but the cleared land is also suitable for raising merino sheep. The Karoonda Development Group instigated and built a larger-than-life sculpture of a Merino ram in the park in the main street to emphasise this. Wynarka is a very small town in South Australia southeast of Adelaide on the Karoonda Highway (B55) and Loxton railway line in the Murray Mallee. Wynarka lies within the District Council of Karoonda East Murray. Founding The government town of Wynarka was proclaimed on 9 January 1913 on land in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Hooper located to the immediate south of the Wynarka Railway Station on the Loxton railway line.
