Cote Sans Dessein, Missouri
Cote Sans Dessein is an extinct town within the still extant Cote Sans Dessein Township in southern Callaway County in the U.S. state of Missouri. The site was on the Missouri River floodplain across the river from Dauphine or Bonnots Mill in Osage County. The town of Cote Sans Dessein survived repeated destruction by flooding, until it was finally largely abandoned and its population mostly dispersed. History A Native American settlement near here meant "upland forest" in the Osage language. ''The History of Callaway County'' by John G. Provines indicates that a patent for a survey of the area was granted in 1800 by the Spanish military government of Louisiana, before transfer to France lasting two years, and indicating that the area had rich soil and abundant fish and game. Cote Sans Dessein Township is one of eighteen townships in Callaway County, Missouri, USA. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,122. Geography Today, Cote Sans Dessein Township covers an area of and, as of 2018, contains no incorporated settlements, but does include the unincorporated community of Tebbetts and the historic riverbank settlements of Cote Sans Dessein and Barkersville (west of Cote Sans Dessein settlement with a post office and school as of 1876), as well as historic Effie (inland and northeast of Tebbetts), plus rural homes. It contains six cemeteries: Farmer, High Hill, Middle River, Riverview, Thorp and Williams, and The streams of Cason Branch, Gallons Creek, Muddy Creek, Rivaux Creek, Rocky Branch, and Sand Springs Branch. Callaway County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 United States Census, the county's population was 44,283. Its county seat is Fulton. With a border formed by the Missouri River, the county was organized November 25, 1820, and named for Captain James Callaway, grandson of Daniel Boone. The county has been historically referred to as "The Kingdom of Callaway" after an incident in which some residents confronted Union troops during the U.S. Civil War. Dauphine, Missouri
Bonnots Mill is an unincorporated community in northern Osage County, Missouri, United States. It is located approximately ten miles east of Jefferson City on the Osage River, near its confluence with the Missouri River. The community of Osage City is about four miles to the west-southwest on the Osage and the community of Tebbetts lies across the Missouri River valley to the north. It has also been known as Dauphine, Bonnets Mills, Bonnots, or Bonnotts Mill. The community was founded in 1852 by a colony of French Canadians and was named for Felix Bonnot, the owner of a local mill. Osage (; Osage: ''Wažáže ie'') is a Siouan language that is spoken by the Osage people of Oklahoma. Their original territory was in present-day Missouri and Kansas but they were gradually pushed west by European-American pressure and treaties. Osage has an inventory of sounds very similar to that of Dakota, also a Siouan language, plus vowel length, preaspirated obstruents and an interdental fricative (like "th" in English "then"). In contrast to Dakota, phonemically aspirated obstruents appear phonetically as affricates, and the high back vowel *u has been fronted to .
