Corrour Lodge
Corrour Lodge is situated at the eastern end of Loch Ossian on the Corrour Estate on Rannoch Moor, Scotland. It is a large modernist residence (also let as luxury holiday accommodation) which opened in 2004 in place of Old Corrour Lodge, which had been destroyed by fire in 1942. The previous lodge had been built in 1896 for John Stirling-Maxwell when he purchased the estate. Earlier still a building now referred to as Corrour Old Lodge had been the estate house and was some three miles to the south. The location is very remote – the entrance drive from the nearest public road is eleven miles long. However Corrour railway station is only about four miles away. Corrour Estate The vast Loch Treig Estates, of which Corrour was a part, were owned by the Macdonalds of Keppoch from the 14th century. The West Highland Line ( gd, Rathad Iarainn nan Eilean - "Iron Road to the Isles") is a railway line linking the ports of Mallaig and Oban in the Scottish Highlands to Glasgow in Central Scotland. The line was voted the top rail journey in the world by readers of independent travel magazine ''Wanderlust'' in 2009, ahead of the notable Trans-Siberian line in Russia and the Cuzco to Machu Picchu line in Peru. The ScotRail website has since reported that the line has been voted the most scenic railway line in the world for the second year running. West Highland Railway
The West Highland Railway was a railway company that constructed a railway line from Craigendoran (on the River Clyde west of Glasgow, Scotland) to Fort William and Mallaig. The line was built through remote and difficult terrain in two stages: the section from Craigendoran to Fort William opened in 1894, with a short extension to Banavie on the Caledonian Canal opening in 1895. It had originally been intended to extend to Roshven, to give good access to sea-going fishery vessels, but the end point was altered to Mallaig, and this section opened in 1901. The Mallaig Extension was notable for the extensive use of mass concrete in making structures for the line; at the time this was a considerable novelty. The line never made a profit, and relied on Government financial support, which was given (amid much controversy) to improve the depressed economic conditions of the region. Loch Ossian
Loch Ossian (Scottish Gaelic: "Loch Oisein") is a narrow loch that is about long on the north eastern edge of Rannoch Moor, on The Corrour Estate, with its western corner east of Corrour railway station. It is drained by the River Ossian, flowing north into Loch Guilbinn and ultimately to the River Spean at Moy. Loch Ossian is remote from public roads, and the nearest access is from Corrour railway station. On its banks near the western end of the loch stands Loch Ossian youth hostel, which belongs to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association Hostelling Scotland (SYHA; Gaelic: ''Comann Osdailean Òigridh na h-Alba'') is part of Hostelling International and provides youth hostel accommodation in Scotland. the organisation represents 58 hostels: 31 run by Hostelling Scotland and 27 af ... Rannoch
Rannoch ( gd, Raineach or , meaning 'bracken') is an area of the Scottish Highlands between the A9 road, to the east, and the A82, to the west. The area is crossed from south to north by the West Highland railway line. Features of the area include Loch Rannoch and Rannoch Moor. The loch is in the northwest of the council area of Perth and Kinross. The moor extends further west, into the south of the Highland council area. The moor is partly within the catchment basin of the loch. The loch itself drains to the east, via the River Tummel into the River Tay. The railway links Rannoch station and Corrour station with Fort William in the north and Glasgow in the south. Gorton Railway Station (West Highland Line)
Gorton railway station or Gortan railway station, named for the nearby Meall a Ghortain area of high ground, was a remote rural private railway station on Rannoch Moor, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Opened in 1894 by the North British Railway, it was located at the present day Gorton Crossing engineer's siding where the ancient Rannoch Drove Road crossed the railway line. Alternative names recorded are Gorton Crossing Station; Gorton Farm; Gorton Platform; Gortan Railway Siding. To prevent confusion with the 'Gorton' in Manchester the LNER applied the name 'Gortan', suggesting that it appeared in timetables. It had originally been changed in 1928 from 'Gortan' to 'Gorton'. Caledonian Sleeper
''Caledonian Sleeper'' is the collective name for overnight sleeper train services between London and Scotland, in the United Kingdom. It is one of only two currently operating sleeper services on the railway in the United Kingdom, the other being the ''Night Riviera'' which runs between London and Penzance. A sleeper service has been run along the West Coast Main Line since 24 February 1873. Sleepers were historically run on the rival East Coast Main Line as well; however, all remaining sleeper services that ran on the east coast routes were withdrawn in May 1988.
