Correspondence Chess
Correspondence chess is chess played by various forms of long-distance correspondence, traditionally through the postal system. Today it is usually played through a correspondence chess server, a public internet chess forum, or email. Less common methods that have been employed include fax, homing pigeon and phone. It is in contrast to (OTB) chess, where the players sit at a chessboard at the same time, or play each other in real time via the internet. Correspondence chess allows people or clubs who are geographically distant to play one another without meeting in person. These distant relationships are just one of the many distinct appeals of correspondence chess. The length of a game played by correspondence can vary depending on the method used to transmit moves: a game played via server or by email might last no more than a few days, weeks, or months; a game played by post between players in different countries might last several years. Alexander Konstantinopolsky
Alexander Markovich Konstantinopolsky (russian: Александр Маркович Константинопольский; 19 February 1910 – 21 September 1990) was a Soviet chess player, trainer and writer. He was a five-time champion of Kiev, and trained the world title challenger David Bronstein from a young age. He was awarded the title of International Master (IM) by FIDE in 1950, won the first Soviet Correspondence Chess Championship in 1951, earned the IM title at correspondence in 1966, and earned the title of Honorary Grandmaster in 1983. Ukrainian master Born in Zhytomyr, Russian Empire, Konstantinopolsky was nearly 20 when he learned chess. This makes him one of the oldest top players in terms of learning the moves of the game. Abram Khasin
Abram Iosifovich Khasin (Russian: Абрам Иосифович Хасин; 15 February 1923 – 6 February 2022) was a Russian chess international master and correspondence grandmaster. Biography Khasin was born in Zaporizhia, and grew up in Ukraine during the 1930s. During World War II, he became a soldier in the Red Army and had both legs amputated after being wounded in the Battle of Stalingrad. After World War II he worked as an English teacher and chess coach. Yuri Nikolaevich Sakharov ( ua, Ю́рій Микола́йович Са́харов; 18 September 1922 – 26 September 1981) was a Ukrainian Chess Master (1958), International Correspondence Chess Master (1971), and Merited Coach of the Ukrainian SSR (1963). Biography Yuri Sakharov was born on 18 September 1922 in Yuzovka (now Donetsk). His father was an official in the Donbas mining industry. In 1937 during the Great Purge he was arrested and executed. Yuri Sakharov became a "son of an enemy of the people." During the Great Patriotic War the Nazis sent him to work in a Belgian coal mine. When Allied Forces entered Belgium, Yuri Sakharov joined the US Army and fought against the Nazis. He earned a Purple Heart Medal. When his unit reached the Elbe in 1945, he was repatriated.
