Copenhagen Cup (harness Racing)
Copenhagen Cup is an international Group One harness racing event at the Charlottenlund Racetrack in Copenhagen, Denmark. The race was established in 1928 and it was known as Internationalt Mesterskap (''International Championship'') until 1966. Since 1975 Copenhagen Cup has been held annually on the second weekend of June. The distance has varied throughout the years, from 1978 it has been 2011 metres. In 1949 International Mesterskap consisted of two races. Charlottenlund Racetrack ( da, Charlottenlund Travbane) is a harness racing track in the town of Charlottenlund in the Capital Region of Denmark. The racetrack, nicknamed ''Lunden'', was established in 1891 by the Danish Trotting Club (''Det Danske Travselskab''). Moni Maker (February 23, 1993 – May 2, 2014) was an American Standardbred racemare who was one of the most successful trotters in history. After her initial success in her native country she was campaigned internationally, winning major races in France, Sweden, Denmark and Italy. Charlie Mills (23 November 1888 in Hamburg – 7 June 1972 in Switzerland) was a German harness racing driver and trainer of an Irish descent. Mills was one of the most legendary harness racers in Europe during his long career that lasted from the 1900s to the early 1960s. Johannes Frömming
Johannes Wilhelm Arthur "Hänschen" Frömming (28 June 1910 – 8 November 1996) was a German harness racing driver and trainer. He is one of the most legendary horsemen in European harness racing. Frömming started his career at the age of 16 in 1926 and drove his last race in 1988. He won a total of 5,592 races. Frömming's major racing wins include three Prix d'Amérique and four Elitloppet victories. He was the German driving champion 11 times in a row from 1934 to 1944 and again in 1947 and 1948. In 1950 and 1953 Frömming tied the title with Gerhard Krüger. Awards and honors During World War II Frömming employed three Jewish horsemen on his farm outside Berlin and hid them from the Nazi authorities. He was later honored for his action by B'nai B'rith International in New York City. In 1972 Frömming received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Ernst Sören Nordin (5 September 1917, in Forsa, Hälsingland – 6 September 2008) was a Swedish harness racing driver and trainer who later started a stable in America. Nordin won 3,221 races in 10 different countries as a driver, he won the Swedish Trotting Derby 11 times – still a record. In 1950, Nordin won the ''Prix d'Amérique'', and in 1953 the ''Elitloppet''. 21 times, Nordin was the champion driver at Solvalla racetrack in Stockholm, Sweden's premier track. In 1981, he moved to the United States to set up the Team Nordin stable together with his son, Jan, training their trotters during the winter at Pompano Park's training center.
