The 2002 Copa Libertadores de América was the 43rd edition of CONMEBOL's premier club football tournament. It was won by the Paraguayan club Olimpia; their third title. Club Olimpia is a Paraguayan sports club based in the city of Asunción. The club promotes the practice of various sports with most importance given to the football, rugby and basketball sides, the former being the highest priority and most successful. They were founded on July 25, 1902 by a group of young Paraguayans, and the name stems from the idea of its principal founding member, William Paats, a Dutchman based in Paraguay, who is considered the father of Paraguayan football for having introduced the practice of the sport in the South American country. Club Sporting Cristal S.A. is a Peruvian sports club located in the city of Lima, best known for its football team. Club Centro Deportivo Olmedo is an Ecuadorian professional football club based in Riobamba, Ecuador. They play in the Serie B. The club won their only national championship in 2000. Their achievement made them the first club outside Quito and Guayaquil to win a national championship. They have also won two Serie B titles in 1994 and 2003.
