Conyngham Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania
Conyngham Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,309 at the 2020 census. History Conyngham Township was formed in 1875 (after breaking away from Hollenback Township). The first settler was Martin Harter (who came in 1795). His immediate followers were James McNeil, James Santee, Philip Fenstermacher, John Andreas, Michael Weiss, John Fenstermacher, and Jeremiah Hess. These individuals, who were mostly of German descent, came from Northampton County. In 1804, the first white child was born in the township. His name was John Fenstermacher, Jr., the grandson of the first settler (Martin Harter). In 1797, Martin Harter built the first frame house. The first store was opened in 1805 by Philip Fenstermacher. He went on to build the first sawmill in 1811. A schoolhouse was later erected in 1813. Pennsylvania Route 239 (PA 239) is a state highway located in Luzerne, Columbia and Lycoming Counties in Pennsylvania. The southern terminus is at PA 93 in Nescopeck Township. The northern terminus is at PA 42 in North Mountain. The route heads north from PA 93 and parallels the Susquehanna River between Wapwallopen and Mocanaqua before crossing the river into Shickshinny and forming a concurrency with U.S. Route 11 (US 11). Past Shickshinny, PA 239 runs west through rural areas to Benton, where it has a concurrency with PA 487. The route continues northwest and crosses PA 118 before it reaches its northern terminus. Lily Lake (also known as Long Pond or Beach Pond) is an impoundment and natural lake in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It has a surface area of approximately 160 acres and is situated on Pond Creek. It is a natural glacial lake in Slocum Township and Conyngham Township. The lake is listed on the Luzerne County Natural Areas Inventory. It is inhabited by eleven species of fish, including alewives and bluegills. The lake has one boat launch. It is named for a Lenni Lenape settlement that was established where Big Wapwallopen Creek feeds into the Susquehanna River. The name derives from Lenape ''òphalahpink'' 'place of white wild hemp'. The borough is named after Shickshinny Creek, which runs through the municipality and the surrounding area. According to the book ''Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania'' (by Dr. George P.
