Construction Of Queensland Railways
Queensland's railway construction commenced in 1864, with the turning of the first sod of the Main Line by Lady Diamantina Bowen, the wife of Queensland's first governor Sir George Bowen at Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. A narrow gauge of was selected due to cost savings in providing a rail link to Toowoomba. Despite being built with bridges wide enough for standard gauge, and the fact that most other lines did not require heavy earthworks, the gauge remained the Queensland system norm. In 1890 there were 11 separate systems being operated by Queensland Railways. The duplications of workshops and other facilities and the inability to transfer locomotives and rollingstock to meet shifting traffic demands between lines created problems. The North Coast railway line, roughly following the coast, and three inland routes now provide the core of the state's rail network. Numerous branch lines, many since closed, once serviced remote areas and provided transport to local industrie ...

The agreement worked out between the two councils of Bowen and Proserpine, was to have a shared responsibility to build and operate the tramway. Construction was underway by the beginning of 1909. Prior to completion, there was a move to transfer construction out of the hands of the local authorities. However, the Government chose not to enter the argument, and the railway between Don (which was a mile from Bowen) and Proserpine opened to traffic on 11 July 1910. Great Western Railway, Queensland
The Great Western Railway was a railway development proposal involving a total of five new lines in western Queensland, Australia. Construction started in 1911 on sections of four of the lines, and three were opened in part before the project was effectively abandoned in 1920. History Following the separation of Queensland from New South Wales in 1859, Queensland consisted of a vast area with a non-indigenous population of ~30,000, most of who lived in the south east corner of the colony. The Queensland Government was keen to facilitate development and immigration, and had approved the construction to the Main Line from Ipswich ~160 km to the fertile Darling Downs region in 1864. This was the first narrow gauge (1067mm or 3’6") main line in the world. For the next 46 years the Queensland government continued to give priority to railway construction projects that were seen as facilitating development and settlement at the expense of system connectivity. At one stage there ...
