Constellation Records (Solar)
Constellation Records was an American label of SOLAR Records, and then MCA Records. History In 1981, Constellation was founded by Dick Griffey, as an attempt to introduce more contemporary acts to Griffey's more traditionally "urban" establishment which was already being distributed through Elektra/Asylum Records. In 1984, Dick Griffey moved the Constellation label over to MCA Records for distribution, deciding to abandon contemporary music and continue the SOLAR tradition. It was a move that finally brought recognition to the label. Among the acts who shifted to the label were veteran ''Soul Train''/SOLAR first lady Carrie Lucas (who eventually married Griffey) and Klymaxx. In 1987, Constellation was folded into MCA, when the artists (including Klymaxx) were transferred to MCA. Universal Music Group owned all of its post-1984 back catalog. Unidisc Music
Unidisc Music is a Canadian independent record label. The label is known for releasing rare music, that was made between the mid-1960s and late 1980s. Genres include rock, electronic, funk, soul, hip hop, jazz, reggae, Latin, disco and a cappella. Unidisc owns the 1982–1993 Sutra Records catalog, and the catalogs of other independent New York labels that the latter distributed. History Founder George Cucuzzella began his career as a nightclub DJ, in Montreal, in the 1970s. He formed a Canadian Record Pool, supplying his mixes to other DJ's across Quebec, and producing remixes. Examples are: '' Lady Bump'' by Penny MacLean, ''Don't Stop the Music'' by the Bay City Rollers, and ''Love to Love'' by Tina Charles. Carrie Lucas
Carrie Lucas (born November 5, 1945) is an American R&B singer, born in Carmel, California. In 1976, she was signed to Soul Train Records. Lucas released six studio albums over seven years, with Soul Train and Solar Records. Lucas was married to Soul Train Records and Solar Records founder Dick Griffey, from 1974 until his death in 2010. Career "I Gotta Keep Dancing" and "Gotta Get Away from Your Love" were the two hit singles from Lucas's first album, '' Simply Carrie'', released in 1977. "I Gotta Keep Dancing" peaked at number 64 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart in 1977. Lucas' second album, '' Street Corner Symphony'', was released in 1978. It featured The Whispers as backing vocalists. A single from the LP, of the same name, was a homage to the 1960s doo-wop groups. Collage was a Los Angeles-based music group, best known for their crossover song "Romeo Where's Juliet?". Career Collage's debut album ''Do You Like Our Music?'', released in 1981 by Solar Records, was produced by the Whispers. Their next album ''Get In Touch'' was typified by the change from disco/funk elements found in the first album to boogie-influenced urban music. Before Collage's departure from the music business they also released album entitled ''Shine The Light'', which also features "Romeo Where's Juliet?". The "real" success, however, came with the release of "Romeo Where's Juliet?", which was a moderate hit in the United Kingdom. Jon Robert Gibson (born January 3, 1962) is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumental musician and record producer. Originally a blue-eyed soul singer, he switched from secular music to contemporary Christian music in the late-1980s. Gibson scored a number of hit singles, including "Jesus Loves Ya" (which spent a then-record 11 weeks at No. 1 on the CCM charts in 1991), "Love Come Down" (1990), "Friend in You" (1988) and "God Loves a Broken Heart" (1986). Gibson ranked No. 59 out of all Christian artists in the 1980s. Klymaxx is an American all-female pop/ R&B band from Los Angeles, California. The band's classic lineup consisted of Bernadette Cooper, Lorena Porter Shelby, Cheryl Cooley, Robbin Grider, Lynn Malsby, and Joyce "Fenderella" Irby. SOLAR (acronym for Sound of Los Angeles Records) was an American record label founded in 1977 by Dick Griffey, reconstituted out of Soul Train Records only two years after it was founded with '' Soul Train'' television show host and creator Don Cornelius. History SOLAR began in 1975 as Soul Train Records, founded by Dick Griffey and ''Soul Train'' creator Don Cornelius. The first act they signed was an R&B vocal quartet they named The Soul Train Gang (Gerald Brown, Terry Brown, Judy Jones, Patricia Williamson, and later Denise Smith), who performed one of Soul Train's many themes, "Soul Train '75".
