Constellation 3D (C3D) was a company developing a medium for 3D optical data storage, using the product names fluorescent multilayer disc (FMD) and fluorescent multilayer card (FMC). History Constellation 3D Technology Limited was a development company, development that started in 1996. The company was formed in the British Virgin Islands, controlled by Irish company Constellation 3D Holdings Limited. Constellation 3D Technology Limited concentrated the R&D taking place in the United States, Israel, Russia, Ukraine and additional subcontractors in other countries. 3D optical data storage is any form of optical data storage in which information can be recorded or read with three-dimensional resolution (as opposed to the two-dimensional resolution afforded, for example, by CD). This innovation has the potential to provide petabyte-level mass storage on DVD-sized discs (120mm). Data recording and readback are achieved by focusing lasers within the medium. However, because of the volumetric nature of the data structure, the laser light must travel through other data points before it reaches the point where reading or recording is desired. Therefore, some kind of nonlinearity is required to ensure that these other data points do not interfere with the addressing of the desired point. In the computer industry, vaporware (or vapourware) is a product, typically computer hardware or software, that is announced to the general public but is late or never actually manufactured nor officially cancelled. Use of the word has broadened to include products such as automobiles. Vaporware is often announced months or years before its purported release, with few details about its development being released. Developers have been accused of intentionally promoting vaporware to keep customers from switching to competing products that offer more features. InPhase Technologies was a technology company developing holographic storage devices and media, based in Longmont, Colorado. InPhase was spun out from Bell Labs in 2000. Their technology promises multiple terabyte storage. In May 2008, the company first reader, tapestry 300r, offered customers a storage capacity of 300 GB, with transfer rates of 20 MB/s in read write mode.
