Conrad Daniels
Conrad Edward Daniels (born September 11, 1941 from New Jersey) is a former American professional darts player who was active from the 1970s to the 1980s. Darts career Daniels was an elite competitor who won or finished near the top of dozens of individual and team events in his career. In 1975, Daniels won both the US Open and North American Open, and reached world #3 in the 1975-76 ratings of the European Darts Organization. He was also a member of the US team that took 2nd place at the 1979 World Cup, and a member of the team that finished in 2nd place at the 1980 Elkadart Nations Cup. Daniels was one of the first American players to seriously challenge British darters at their own game. In 1975 he participated in The Indoor League (Yorkshire television's) Champion of Champions Dart Tournament, contested by the best players from around the world. 1980 BDO World Darts Championship
The 1980 Embassy World Darts Championship was the third year that the British Darts Organisation had staged a world championship. Again the field was 24 players, with the top seeds receiving a bye to the last 16 stage. For the second successive year the tournament was staged at Jollees Cabaret Club in Stoke-on-Trent. Defending champion John Lowe, who had released a book ''The Lowe Profile'' just before the event suffered a surprise defeat 0–2 to Cliff Lazarenko saying afterwards "If you miss your doubles in this one, you must expect to go out." Eric Bristow was then immediately installed as favourite to win the event and would meet another flamboyant character of the game in the final – Bobby George. George, who was not invited to the qualifiers the previous year appeared in a sequined shirt and when arriving on the stage was presented with a candelabra to complete a Liberace effect. Douglas "Doug" McCarthy is an English former professional darts player who played in British Darts Organisation events in the 1970s and 1980s. Career McCarthy played in four BDO World Darts Championships. In 1979, he beat Charlie Ellix in the first round but lost in round two to John Lowe. In 1980, McCarthy beat Conrad Daniels in round one before losing to Jocky Wilson in the second round. In 1981, McCarthy lost in the first round to Ceri Morgan and 1982 he beat Jerry Umberger in round one but lost in round two to Bobby George. McCarthy also played in four World Masters tournaments but failed to reach the quarter-final stage. McCarthy also represented England on 19 occasions and was a member of the England Team including Eric Bristow and John Lowe which won the Europe Cup in 1978. Nicky Virachkul
Nicholas "Nick" Virachkul (June 3, 1948 – April 17, 1999) was an American professional darts player who competed in the 1970s and 1980s. Personal life Nicky Virachkul was born in Thailand, studied in the United States and became a naturalized citizen. Darts career Virachkul represented the United States internationally in dart tournaments. He competed at the first Embassy World Darts Championship in 1978, losing narrowly by 7–8 in the semi-final to eventual champion, Leighton Rees. He won third place in a play-off by defeating Stefan Lord. Virachakul reached the quarter-finals on three other occasions: in 1981 (losing to Eric Bristow), 1982 (losing to Bobby George) and 1984 (losing to Dave Whitcombe). Despite his respectable record, it was nevertheless a surprise when he defeated the defending World Champion, Keith Deller, in the first round of the 1984 World Championship. Winmau World Masters
The World Masters is one of the longest-running and most prestigious of the BDO/WDF tournaments, which began in 1974. The tournament is sponsored by darts board manufacturer, Winmau. The World Masters was unusual in darts in that its sets are the best of 3 legs (first to 2) rather than the standard best of 5 legs (first to 3). It was previously the final leg of the BDO's Grand Slam title of televised majors, along with the BDO World Darts Championship, International Darts League and World Darts Trophy, until the latter two tournaments were axed in 2008. The champion is referred to as the World Master. After the collapse of the British Darts Organisation in September 2020, the World Darts Federation announced plans to launch the WDF World Masters. 1981 BDO World Darts Championship
The 1981 Embassy World Darts Championship was the fourth year that the British Darts Organisation had staged a world championship. The field was expanded from 24 to 32 players, the format which would remain for many years. For the third successive year the tournament was staged at Jollees Cabaret Club in Stoke-on-Trent. Eric Bristow was back to defend his title and would face John Lowe the champion of two years previously in the final. The final was the best of nine sets, but there was a break scheduled after three sets where the third-fourth place play-off match would be held. Lowe ran away with the first two sets without dropping a leg and took the first leg in the third set before Bristow finally got onto the scoreboard. The "Crafty Cockney" held on to take that third set to go into the break just one set behind. As in the previous year's final, Bristow edged ahead to lead 4–3 in sets and Lowe (as Bobby George did in 1980) had darts to take the match into a final set. Howeve ...
