1981 BDO World Darts Championship
The 1981 Embassy World Darts Championship was the fourth year that the British Darts Organisation had staged a world championship. The field was expanded from 24 to 32 players, the format which would remain for many years. For the third successive year the tournament was staged at Jollees Cabaret Club in Stoke-on-Trent. Eric Bristow was back to defend his title and would face John Lowe the champion of two years previously in the final. The final was the best of nine sets, but there was a break scheduled after three sets where the third-fourth place play-off match would be held. Lowe ran away with the first two sets without dropping a leg and took the first leg in the third set before Bristow finally got onto the scoreboard. The "Crafty Cockney" held on to take that third set to go into the break just one set behind. As in the previous year's final, Bristow edged ahead to lead 4–3 in sets and Lowe (as Bobby George did in 1980) had darts to take the match into a final set. Howeve ... Jollees
Jollees was a live music and cabaret venue in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom. The venue was re-established in March 2016, after having closed in 1992. The original venue was opened in October 1973 and was the largest capacity cabaret venue in the UK in the 1970s. It also hosted the World Professional Darts Championship from 1979 to 1985. Opening The venue had previously been a restaurant and bowling alley. Construction began in late 1972, after the venue's alcohol licence application had been approved, and cost £200,000. The opening night was attended by 1,600 people, including World Cup winning England international footballers Geoff Hurst and Gordon Banks. Len Heard
Leonard "Len" Heard (born January 18, 1942) is a former English-American professional darts player who competed in British Darts Organisation (BDO) events in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He was nicknamed Lenny. Career Heard reached the final of the 1979 North American Open, losing to Eric Bristow. Heard then played in the 1980 BDO World Darts Championship, losing in the first round to Dave Whitcombe. Heard then won the 1980 North American Open. Then of the 1980 World Masters who losing to Kari Saukkonen of Finland. In the 1981 BDO World Darts Championship, Heard lost in the first round to fellow American Jerry Umberger. Alan Hudson (darts Player)
Alan Anthony Hudson (born 21 June 1951) is an English former footballer who played for Arsenal, Chelsea, Stoke City and the Seattle Sounders as well as the England national football team. Club career Chelsea Born and brought up near the King's Road, Hudson was initially rejected by the club he supported as a boy, Fulham, before signing schoolboy terms with Chelsea. Injury denied him the chance to become Chelsea's youngest-ever player, aged 16, and he eventually made his senior debut nine months later on 1 February 1969 in a 5–0 loss against Southampton. Tony Sontag
Anthony Sontag (2 March 1956 – 24 July 2018) was an English professional darts player who competed in the 1970s and 1980s. Darts career Sontag reached the semi-finals of the 1978 British Open, losing to the eventual winner Eric Bristow. He reached the semi-finals of the 1978 Winmau World Masters, defeating Doug McCarthy and Charlie Ellix before losing to Tony Brown. Sontag played in the 1979 BDO World Darts Championship, losing in the first round to Ronnie Davies of Wales. He won the Bullseye Darts Championship later in the year. He reached the second round of the 1980 BDO World Darts Championship, beating Rab Smith of Scotland in the first round before losing to Leighton Rees of Wales. Charlie Ellix
Charlie Ellix (18 October 1941 – 18 March 2002) was an English professional darts player. Career Ellix reached the final in the 1976 Indoor League, losing to Leighton Rees. He then reached the quarter finals of the 1977 Winmau World Masters, losing to eventual winner Eric Bristow. Ellix reached another final in the 1978 Denmark Open where he lost to John Lowe and then reached the quarter final in the 1978 World Masters, losing to Tony Sontag. Ellix played in the 1979 BDO World Darts Championship, losing in the first round to Doug McCarthy. He returned to Jollees two years later for the 1981 BDO World Darts Championship, again losing in the first round to Dave Whitcombe. On 29 April 1974 he threw the then fastest (in numbers of darts thrown) 3,001 when he achieved this score with only 79 darts, an average of 37.98 per dart. Ellix died on 18 March 2002. Terry O'Dea
Terence "Terry" O'Dea (3 May 1945 – 18 May 2021) was an Australian professional darts player who competed in the 1970s and 1980s. Darts career O'Dea rejoined of the BDO in March 1978. O'Dea played in ten successive BDO World Darts Championships with his best run coming in 1982 and 1986 where he reached the quarter-finals. O'Dea also played in four Winmau World Masters, World Masters tournaments, reaching the quarter-finals in 1984. He appeared on the UK television show Bullseye (UK game show), Bullseye presented by Jim Bowen in 1984 where he scored 300 points (in 9 darts) for charity. He appeared two years later and scored 305. O'Dea quit the BDO in 1988. Barry Atkinson
Barry Atkinson (14 December 1937 – 13 December 2021) was an English-born Australian professional darts player. Nicknamed Bazza, he competed in events of the 1970s and 1980s. Darts career Atkinson played in the 1977 Winmau World Masters where he lost in the last 16 stage to Paul Reynolds who went on to reach the final and lose to Eric Bristow. He played in the inaugural BDO World Darts Championship in 1978, but lost in the first round 6–0 in legs to eventual champion Leighton Rees from Wales. He returned the next year, but again lost in the first round to Ceri Morgan from Wales in 1979. Atkinson left the BDO in December 1988. Gordon Allpress
Gordon James Allpress (born 12 June 1949) is a New Zealand former professional darts player who competed in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s before retiring in 1992. He eventually made a short comeback in 2003. Allpress finished 5th at the 1985 World Darts Federation (WDF) World Cup. He defeated former World No. 1 Leighton Rees in the last 16 before losing to the World No. 1 at the time, Eric Bristow 4–1, in the quarter-final. Allpress' performance helped him reach No. 8 in the world rankings. He is nicknamed Gordy. Wayne Locke is a Welsh former professional darts player. Steve Brennan
Stephen Edward Brennan (born 2 November 1951) is an English professional darts player who competed in the 1980s. He was a civil engineer from Leiston and began playing county darts for Suffolk in 1979–1980. He was eligible to play for Northern Ireland because his father Patrick "Pat" Brennan was born in Derry. Nine-dart Finish
A nine-dart finish, also known as a nine-darter, is a perfect leg or single game in the sport of darts. The object of the game is to score a set number of points, most commonly 501; in order to win, a player must reach the target total exactly and hit a double scoring area with their last dart. When the target is 501, the minimum number of darts needed to reach it is nine. For example, one way to achieve a nine-dart finish is to score 60 (triple 20) on each of the first seven throws, then a 57 (triple 19) on the eighth, and lastly a 24 (double 12) on the ninth. It is regarded as an extremely difficult feat to achieve even for the sport's top players, and is considered the highest single-game achievement in the sport, similar to a maximum 147 break in snooker or a 300-point game in bowling. Dave Whitcombe
David Whitcombe (born 27 June 1954) is an English former professional darts player who won several major tournaments and reached two World Championship Finals between 1980 and 1992. Biography Whitcombe was twice a winner of the Winmau World Masters (1982 and 1985) and lost to Eric Bristow in the World Championship finals of 1984 and 1986. He also won the News of the World Darts Championship in 1989, the British Matchplay, the Swedish Open 3 times, the Finland Open, the Marlboro Masters and Dunlop Masters tournaments. He was also a prolific county and holiday camp open winner. He played for and captained Kent in the inter counties league, winning the BDO (Darts World Magazine Sponsored) Tons Trophy and individual averages.
