Congo, Missouri
Congo is an extinct town in southwestern Shannon County, Missouri, Shannon County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. Congo and the Congo School were located approximately three miles southwest of Montier, Missouri, Montier and US Route 60. Spring Creek (Eleven Point River tributary), Spring Creek flows past the location to the southwest. A post office called Congo was established in 1895, and remained in operation until 1931. Shannon County, Missouri
Shannon County is a county in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,031. Its county seat is Eminence. The county was officially organized on January 29, 1841, and was named in honor of George F. "Peg-Leg" Shannon, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It is the second-largest county by area in Missouri. Missouri's first copper mine was opened in Shannon County in 1846 and Missouri's only manganese mine was opened here during World War II. As of the 2000 census, Shannon County ranked 78th on the list of counties with the lowest per capita income and 46th on the list of counties with the lowest median household incomes in the United States, making it the poorest county in Missouri. Montier is a census-designated place in southwestern Shannon County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 49. History A variant name was "Monteer". A post office called Monteer was established in 1889, and the spelling was changed to Montier in 1924. The community has the name of A. N. Montier, a railroad official. US Route 60
U.S. Route 60 is a major east–west United States highway, traveling from southwestern Arizona to the Atlantic Ocean coast in Virginia. The highway's eastern terminus is in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where it is known as Pacific Avenue, in the city's Oceanfront resort district at the intersection of 5th Street and Winston-Salem Avenue. Its original western terminus was in Springfield, Missouri; it was then extended to Los Angeles, California, but in 1964, it was truncated to end southwest of Brenda, Arizona, at an interchange with Interstate 10 (I-10) after the US 60 highway designation was removed from California. I-10 replaced US 60 from Beaumont, California, to Arizona, and California State Route 60 (SR 60) replaced US 60 from Los Angeles to Beaumont.
