Concord, Angelina County, Texas
Concord is a ghost town in Angelina County, Texas, Angelina County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located within the Lufkin, Texas micropolitan area. History The area in what is known as Concord today was first settled by Colonel T.L. Mott and his family, who moved to Texas with his family from Alabama in the late 1850s. They established a church with other area families that next decade and named it after the Book of Concord, which is referenced in the second book of Corinthians in the Bible. It continued to operate until the Sam Rayburn Reservoir was built in the 1960s. The church and cemetery then moved to Zavalla, Texas, Zavalla. A log cabin and corn crib were purchased by Bennie Polk Morgan who moved them to Jasper County, Texas, Jasper County. Geography Concord was located east of Zavalla, Texas, Zavalla in eastern Angelina County. Education Concord had its school in 1900. A corn crib or corncrib is a type of granary used to dry and store corn. It may also be known as a cornhouse or corn house. Overview After the harvest and while still on the cob, corn is placed in the crib either with or without the husk. The typical corn crib has slats in its walls to allow air to circulate through the corn, both allowing it to dry initially and helping it stay dry. The slats expose the corn to pests, so corn cribs are elevated beyond the reach of rodents. Although granaries had been used around the world in many cultures who grew grain for food, corn cribs were first used by Native Americans and then quickly adopted by European settlers. Zavalla is a city in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 603 at the 2020 census. The town is named for Lorenzo de Zavala, a Mexican rancher, politician, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence who served as the first Vice-President of the Republic of Texas. Its city limits stretch several miles south of town into a heavily wooded area. Demographics As of the 2020 United States census, there were 603 people, 257 households, and 191 families residing in the city. Sam Rayburn Reservoir
Sam Rayburn Reservoir is a reservoir in the United States in Deep East Texas, north of Beaumont. The reservoir is fed by the Angelina River, the major tributary of the Neches River. The Reservoir is upstream of the Big Thicket National Preserve. The reservoir's capacity is , and is the largest lake wholly within the state of Texas. The reservoir is operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth district. History Construction began September 7, 1956, and the reservoir began serving its purpose on March 29, 1965. The main purposes of the reservoir are flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and conservation of water. Construction costs, including those for recreation facilities, were estimated at about $66 million. It was known as McGee Bend Dam and Reservoir until 1963. Lufkin, Texas
Lufkin is the largest city in Angelina County, Texas and the county seat. The city is situated in Deep East Texas and about 60 miles west of the Texas-Louisiana border. Its estimated population is 35,021 as of July 1, 2019. Lufkin was founded in 1884 and named for Abraham P. Lufkin. It originally served as a stop on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway. It was officially incorporated on October 15, 1890. Lufkin continued to serve as a stop on the railroad until 1890. Three businessmen founded Angelina Lumber Company, which led to much of the economic prosperity Lufkin later had. When the so-called "timber boom" came to an end, a new "golden era of expansion" began. Lufkin became more industrialized with the opening of Lufkin Industries and Southland Paper Mill.
