The Communes of Senegal are the fourth-level administrative divisions in Senegal (below country, region and department). There are some 121 communes in Senegal which have urban status (''communes de ville''), apart from 46 ''communes d'arrondissement'' in the large towns and 370 rural communities (''communautés rurales'') in the countryside. Foundiougne Department is one of the departments of Senegal, located in the Fatick Region. Economy Foundiougne is a main hub on the Sine-Saloum river in the Fatick Region of Senegal. It is a popular launch pad for eco-tours to see the abundant mangroves along the river. A ferry (connecting Foundiougne to the main road leading to Fatick) crosses the river at set times throughout the day transporting locals and tourists alike. Services that can be found include a post office, hospital, grocery stores, a pharmacy, restaurants, an internet cafe, and hotels. A high school in town serves Foundiougne and Mbam. There is a market every Tuesday (called a luma) on the edge of town, near the road to Mbam. At the weekly Luma, residents can purchase anything that they might require, ranging from plastic buckets to cooking pots to fabric to sandals to western clothing. Fatick ( wo, Fatik, srr, Fatik) is a town in Senegal, located between M'bour and Kaolack and inhabited by the Serer people. Its 2005 population was estimated at 24,243. It is the capital of the Fatick Region and the Fatick Department. Toponymy Its name (Fatick), including its region and department take their names from one of the Serer maternal clans (''Fatik'')—which derives from the Serer term ''Fati Ubadik'' ("we have more to go"). The name is also spelled ''Patik'' following its pronunciation which is the same as the Fatik matriclan. The 15th century King of Sine Wasilla Faye named it after his father's matriclan. Diakhao
Diakhao ( Serer proper : Jaxaaw) is a commune in the Fatick Region in the west of Senegal. History Diakhao was the last capital of the pre-colonial Serer Kingdom of Sine. It has several sites classified as historical monuments. It houses the tombs of the Serer kings such as Maad a Sinig Kumba Ndoffene Famak Joof (king of Sine), the tombs of the Guelowars, the Lingeers and the Kanger (or ''Kangeer'') baobab, a place of libation of the kings of Sine (Maad a Sinig). In 1867 at the Surprise of Mbin o Ngor (a surprise attack against the Serers by the Muslim marabout which precipitated the Battle of Fandane-Thiouthioune), Diakhao was burned to the ground by the marabouts. To rebuild his capital (Diakhao), Maad a Sinig Kumba Ndoffene Famak implemented new tax measures throughout the Sine.
