CBC Radio One is the English-language news and information radio network of the publicly owned Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It is commercial-free and offers local and national programming. It is available on AM and FM to 98 percent of Canadians and overseas over the Internet, and through mobile apps. CBC Radio One is simulcast across Canada on Bell Satellite TV satellite channels 956 and 969, and Shaw Direct satellite channel 870. Elamin Abdelmahmoud
Elamin Abdelmahmoud is a Sudanese Canadian writer, culture and politics commentator, and podcast host based in Toronto, Ontario. He is best known as a culture writer for BuzzFeed and as host of ''Pop Chat'' and co-host of ''Party Lines'' with Rosemary Barton. In November 2022 the CBC announced that Abdelmahmoud will debut on January 30, 2023, as the host of '' Commotion'', a daily pop culture magazine show which will air after '' Q'' weekday mornings. Early life and education Abdelmahmoud was born in Sudan and emigrated to Canada at the age of 12, settling in Kingston, Ontario. He studied philosophy and gender studies at Queen's University, graduating in 2011. As a student at Queen's he wrote for the ''Queen’s Journal'' and worked at CFRC-FM, the campus radio station. ''q with Tom Power'' (previously known as ''q with Jian Ghomeshi'') is a Canadian arts magazine show produced by and airing on CBC Radio One, with syndication to public radio stations in the United States through Public Radio Exchange. The program mainly features interviews with prominent cultural and entertainment figures, though subjects and interviewees also deal with broader cultural topics such as their social, political and business aspects, as well as weekly panels on television/film and music on Mondays and Fridays respectively. Though not the highest-rated show on CBC Radio One ('' The Current'' and ''As It Happens'' hold that distinction), ''Q'' is the highest rated show in its timeslot in CBC history, surpassing even Peter Gzowski who previously hosted the second hour of '' Morningside'' during the slot. Tom Power (musician)
Tom Power (born May 1, 1987) is a Canadian musician and broadcaster, best known as the host of '' Q'' on CBC Radio One, previously the host of '' Deep Roots'' and '' Radio 2 Morning'' on CBC Radio 2. In August 2016, he was named as the permanent new host of ''Q'', succeeding Shad. Based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Power began hosting ''Deep Roots'' in 2008 while he was a student of folklore at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Just 21 years old at the time, he was the youngest host of a national program on CBC Radio since Peter Jennings. After Bob Mackowycz's departure as host of ''Radio 2 Morning'' in July 2011, Power spent several weeks as the show's interim host before being named the permanent new host in November.
