Commonwealth Judo Association
The Commonwealth Judo Association (CJA) is an international sporting body for judo across the Commonwealth of Nations. The CJA was founded following a meeting held at the 1983 World Judo Championships in Seoul, South Korea. Mr. Owen Clarke (Scotland) was the first President, and Mr. Harry O’Rourke (New Zealand) the first Chairman. Mr. Owen was succeeded by Mr. O'Rourke, who combines the role of Chairman with that of Executive President. Mr. John Sullivan is current President. Commonwealth Of Nations
The Commonwealth of Nations, simply referred to as the Commonwealth, is a political association of 56 member states, the vast majority of which are former territories of the British Empire. The chief institutions of the organisation are the Commonwealth Secretariat, which focuses on intergovernmental aspects, and the Commonwealth Foundation, which focuses on non-governmental relations amongst member states. Numerous organisations are associated with and operate within the Commonwealth. World Judo Championships
The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, along with the Olympic judo competition. The championships are held once every year (except the years when the Olympics take place) by the International Judo Federation, and qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Team competitions have also been held since 1994. The men's championships began in 1956, though the format and periodicity of the championships have changed over time. The last edition of the championships took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2022. History The first edition of the world championships took place in Tokyo, Japan in 1956. Commonwealth Judo Championships
The Commonwealth Judo Championships are an international judo competition, open to countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. Inaugurated in 1986, the Championships are held on a biennial basis, and are recognised by the Commonwealth Games Federation, and organised by the Commonwealth Judo Association. As Judo is an optional sport for the purposes of the Commonwealth Games, on the three occasions since 1986 that judo has been included in the Commonwealth Games programme, the Games judo tournament has doubled as the Commonwealth Judo Championships for that year; in 1990, 2002 and 2014. On these occasions, the host organising committee of the Games takes responsibility for organising the tournament on behalf of the CJA and CGF. From 2022, Judo will become a core sport in the Commonwealth Games schedule.
